Hi my scanmaster showed .7 degrees of retard. Is that to much? should I back down the boost? It was fine till it got colder out.

thanks
Jack

Jack,
See link in the bottom of my sig "Sick of KR?".
That is an EXCELLENT write-up from one of the experts.

lol, when I see .7 kr, I assume thats false. When I see 5 deg.kr, I push the gas further, thats with a t66. If its under 8 deg. kr, i'm still on it full throttle. But i'm sure others will chime in and say, OH MY GOD AHHHHH, .7 DEG!!!! turn down the BOOST!!! f- that, turn it up a little:smile:
but beware, see my little pic up there, looks just like jeryll's did before he changed his pic, but his was worst hehe.

That is very small, when you get around 5-6 its iffy, and like TURBOELKY said, 8 degrees start to worrying.

That's funny!
You are right though, mine was "simply stupendous". ;)

Until it got colder out, is the density of the air a factor, seeing that it will lean the tune!?

Dan

I didn't prime my alky one time and saw 19 on scanmaster  . Thank God my head gaskets didn't blow. 5-7 KR I let off. If the KR escalates for say 2,3,5 That is real knock. If it just pops up and stays the same usually that means it is false knock

I still dont understand why any of you will run with knock. Sure .7 isnt going to blow right there, but the longer your running with knock, the shorter the engine will last. If I was running for pinks or money, sure I wouldnt pay attention to it, but if its just test and tune or messing around, why?

So, the answer to the original question is;
"It depends".

If it is 0.7 KR and it is false KR, No issues.
It it is 0.7 KR at 5 PSI, it won't blow anything at that boost level
It it is 0.7 KR at 25 PSI, and it is real, you may want to lift.

The ECM should "learn" very quickly to get the right mixture, so lean shouldn't be the problem. But cooler air is denser, and cooler air makes the IC work better, so the air into the engine gets even more dense. With same boost, you will have more pounds of air into the engine, with more fuel, and it can raise combustion pressures past the knock point. I think you could make MORE power, by turning the boost down just a tad, if you have one of those quick boost controls. But I've never seen any test figures to verify that, so it's just a guess.

if you put a scanmaster on a stock car, i'm sure it would knock here and there. Have you ever driven a regular car maybe going up a hill? and you floor it and hear something like a bag of marbles? or valve chatter you think? thats knock/pinging. it happens. In a performance engine, its bound to happen, especially in a turbo engine. Before I had a scanmaster, and I had a stock turbo, I ran around with up to 19 deg knock, and did'nt know:eek: put a scanmaster on and found out I had that problem:D did'nt blow anything up, but yeah it probably did damage a head gasket, making it easier for the 66 to blow it to smitherines.... but that little bit of knock is nothing. you have to assume its falst that little. If its not up to 8 deg or so, you'll be safe. Enjoy the car, dont be scared of it. If it blows, it blows. at least you can say you had fun blowing it:cool:

Yes stock cars have tons of knock. I dare you to find knock on any my current or past cars. You wont find any. And no, none of my regular cars knock either. I have one of those all in one gauges on my Silverado and WOT it doesnt have any knock...

 are you upset? I'll tell you what. Drive the cars out here to california, and i'll check them all for ya. me and my car play knock knock who's there.
oh yeah, my ford f150"company owned thank god!" has all kinds of pinging going on, it sucks!.

No im not upset lol...Come here and I'll take you for a ride. Its more of a thing of why have knock when you dont have to?

Jason

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll back off the boost a small amount. Just to be safe.
