I was putting around town in the GN today....watching my coolant temp....and noticed it was ranging anywhere from 200 to 210 degrees! Is this normal?

Car has 188,000 miles on chasis (2,000 on new engine and turbo). New stock thermostat was installed upon rebuild.
Im using original radiator.

The cooler the beter;) put a 160 thermostat in it and dont worry so much:D

That temp sounds normal.. HTH

Since you do not say where you are or what the outside temp was, a guess would be your original radiator is ready for the scrap pile.

In the past few years I have flow tested many original T-R radiators and not seen one flow better than 50%.

In 110+ degrees, a GN here with new rad, RMI and water will run at 180 degrees with a 160 thermostat. Your operating temp is NOT normal where ever you are!

I bet the relay for the high speed fan is shot. I'm assuming because of the vagueness of your post, you usually monitor your coolant temps , and they usually are not that high, and that the outside air temp is not unusually high. Usually if it shoots up that high all of a sudden, its the fan .

i just got the scanmaster about a month ago...and the coolant usually stays around 200-204

One of my buddies from work said, that 200+ deg. was too hot.....
I had no idea what the normal temp. was for these cars.

Since 1987 I have changed lots of original thermostats and never seen a 195 from the factory, only 180's.

If memory serves me right, the 84 turbos had a 195* thermostate. 87 came stock with 180*. Not saying that maybe some didn't have a diifferent one in them for what ever reason.

Gary :)

Hmm sounds a little high to me for just put'n around. My old motor with the stock t stat would run that after a run or two.

Testing lastnight with many 22psi blasts the temp only got to 165* with a 160 t stat and just water. But it was in the 60's lastnight here and I run duel fans.
