it went bang

i just bought a 87 gn
on the first night i was driving it and i hit the gas the boost came up it made some loud pops then a bang
then it sounded like a major exahaust leak on the drivers side
still iddled smooth but im scared its wasted
the guy i got it from never opened it up
so any ideas what happened
i will look at it this weekend

that exhaust leak could be a headgasket.......see if you can determine where the leak is

Sure sounds like a blown-out head gasket to me. What a way to join the GN community...

BUT!

Sometimes the intercooler lines just pop off. Usually the car runs like crap after this happens, including a very poor idle/stalling.

Why wait till the weekend? Take a look tonight and let us know what you find.

I think I would have started this thread with a or a , but hey thats just me. It sure does sound like a headgasket to me too, but the easiest thing to check is you intercooler hoses as mentioned. Look at them very carefully, and hope that is your problem. If not, may be time for a compression test. You need to find out exactly what mods are on the car (ie chip, injectors, pump, etc), do the spring cleaning, and get a scantool before you open her up like that again. Good luck!

If its still idles OK, doesn't miss with a steady 2000 rev and the oil doesn't look like a milk shake your head gaskets should be ok.

Since these cars never came with gaskets on the exhaust manifolds I would check to see if someone put some in and they may have blown out.

Also they may have put a gasket on the turbo connection - I would only use a copper gasket there or nothing.

Get a boost gauge to see how much boost your actually running.

Check the Y hose behind the turbo, if it has come off there you will have mega boost at part throttle and the potential for engine damage.

it sounds more like i blew the exaust off the car
all most what it sounds like when you blow out a spak plug
o ya the car is all stock no mods as of yet lol
