How good are these units..
I understand they let TONS of air flow
but they are allowing less than clean air in..

Anybody have any insights if this is true?

I use one and have had zero problems with "less than clean air". In fact all the TRs I have seen in the area - approx 12 - have a K&N hooked up in some sort of configuration.

I would say less than clean air as you can often find dust inside the next....nothing course, tho.

Seen some vacuum drop tests of different filters. paper versus cone etc etc. The stock airbox dropped like 12 inches of pressure versus an aftermarket cold air kit dropping like 5. The differences in filters was like 1-2" at most. Filters aren't the restriction, somehow, unless you have really small filter area. gnttype.org has some formulas for figuring out filter areas for different levels of performance. The brand or composition of the filter isn't nearly as important as size, and the piping is -far- more important than the filter itself.
