Looking to buy a 42" or 47" for the basement.............

Brother in law says no on a plasma.....................

Said get an LCD.............. or blue ray............

Really dont want the Blue Ray $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ as a basement TV:biggrin:

Ups and downs to both. Plasma has better picture but 5yr shelf life. LCD picture is not as sharp and has a shelf life of 10+ years and is cheaper than plasma. I was in Best Buy the other day and seen a 47" plasma playing a blu-ray disc of Pirates of the Car. and the picture was absolutely incredible. If your not going to watch this TV on a daily basis and like HQ then the Plasma is the way to go. LCD's are not far behind however.

First of all, any LCD you'd buy in this size range would likely be a flat panel, as are all plasmas.

An LCD has the advantage of less glare, which may or may not be important, depending on how bright your room is.

Reliabily-wise, I believe the LCD to be more reliable, but let's call it a draw.

I'd recommend Sony - their Bravia line of 46" flat panel LCDs consists of 6 discrete models ranging in price from $1,900 to $3,400, but expect to pay less at, for example, big box stores.

Category Page Flat Panel (46" to 70")

Lastly, Blu-ray is Sony's high-density optical disc format. Blu-ray discs play in Blu-ray disc players, and then on your TV. Think of Blu-ray discs as hot rodded DVDs. Picture quality (PQ) can be spectacular.

Silly Q; what's the diff in plasma and LCD? And all this hi def stuff...???????

Second that. I was in Circuit City last night and they were playing Pir of Carr (Blue RAY)on a 50" Samsung Plasma from a Playstation 3 HDMI hookup. It made every other TV in the place look bad. It was the cleanest, sharpest picture I have ever seen. I dont think Johnny Depp would have looked that clear even if I was on the ship standing next to him.

Plasma is also much better for off angle viewing and the life is claimed to be near the same as other big screens. They also claim to have solved the burn-in problems.

Plasma is heavy - big piece of glass in the screen, uses lots of energy - but man it has a great picture FROM any angle.

Sony LCD screens are Samsung and after all the BS Samsung rebate scam crapolla - screw them!!!

I went with this: Panasonic TH-50PX77U Flat-panel TV reviews - CNET Reviews I like the antiglare surface. The plasmas have a very shiny surface so if you have any light from windows or lamps they reflect in the screen and are destracting. I got mine at Circuit City. I shopped at the website and they kept sending specials and coupons. Finally I got a price that was pretty low with all the specials and coupons combined. I printed out the online price and got the saleperson to honor the price. Get your cables here: HDMI cables and DVI cables all at Fantastic Prices and Free Shipping! much cheaper than the stores and just as good.

My parents own an electronic repair store and has all/most of the major MFR business for warranty repairs (Sony, Toshiba, LG/Zenith, etc.) and the ONE thing you HAVE to get is the extended warranty from the dealer if they offer one. They have done around 400 units last year for warranty work on the picture screens (or whatever they are called) which seem to go out within 4-5 years and the extended warranty can save you THOUSANDS.
Also, if you don't get a name brand then you get what you pay for: Westinghouse = Bad..

As was mentioned check out the AVS forum link above.

I got a 55" Zenith plasma and LOVE IT hanging on the wall.

KS:cool:

Not any more.

Absolutely LOVE my 46" Sony Bravia XBR4!!!!!

Plasma and LCD now have virtually identical viewing angles.

Plasma probably has the edge on deep blacks and bright whites, but I could no longer tell the difference viewed side by side.

Plasmas do use a LOT more energy (probably not a concern unless you're a "greeny").
They also generate a ton more heat!!

+1 I will take the pepsi challenge anyday with my LCD.

Compared many over the course of 9 months and went with a Samsung 46" 1080p HDTV. Very pleased

few months back bought an LG 50 Plasma for $1300,they were out of stock and wanted to give me the pioneer for the same price ,but the pic of LG was better....

You might wait a couple months as laser tv is just on the horizon and is supposed to blow LCD and PLAZMA both away

I have a Toshiba Regza 1080P 120Hz LCD TV and a Toshiba Blu-Ray player....the picture quality is absolutely crystal clear. I Highly recommend it.

I got my plasma about a year ago and was wondering how the prices looked a year later; so, I just looked a few hours ago and only looked at a few LCD's but...

The Plasma still blows away the LCD. The LCD picture still changes in contrast and brightness very quickly after leaving the perfect viewing angle.

Sony LCD = Samsung screen

First time I have heard that one. I don't believe the LG's are a top tier engineered TV like the Pioneer.

This is from research a year old, much of it from the AV fourms mentioned above.

Wonder why mine does not exhibit this???

and yes, Sony LCD's do use Samsung screens (best by far), which is one of it's big draw points, that plus the fact that the Sony XBR's technology driving the screen is far superior to Samsung. Best of both worlds, Samsung screen, Sony electronics.

Adjust the contrast and brightness - turn off all the color and contrast enhancers - makes it look bold in the store next to other TV's but not a realistic picture and then walk from behind an LCD, around to the center front. I always notice a change in the LCD picture, of course ya can't have too much angle on an LCD or there will be no picture.

Many LCD's have a screen door effect too
