This may seem like a stupid question, but does anyone know how to attach the top of a license plate to the front bumper. I have the factory front license plate bracket, but that only has holes for the lower holes on the license plate. My car has two square holes about a half inch by half inch on the front bumper. Is it supoosed to have bolts there? Any pictures of the front of a GN would be helpful showing this area. I should know the answer to this but dont. Hopefully you do. Thanks.

The LP bracket attaches to the bottom of the bumper using 2 screws.

The LP bottom holes attach to the LP bracket using 2 screws and 2 plastic nuts that install into square holes in the LP bracket.

The LP top holes rest against two plastic spacers that install into square holes in the bumper - there are NO screws attaching the LP top holes to the spacers.

Sounds like you're missing the spacers...

You can get them through a dealer. GM part number 559547. If you knew what they looked like you could probally find them on the HELP rack at AutoZone. They aren't the flush-head type but are raised about a 1/2". Round body with a square flange.

Okay guys, I have an even goofier question about this...

I broke one of my white spacers and two pieces dropped INTO one of the top holes in the front bumper.

Does the backing plate come apart from the front section of the bumper or is it one piece? Do I need to put a fish tape inside with a wad of exposed tape (into one of the bigger holes in the back) and just try to randomly get the pieces out?

It just bothers me-- any advice on getting those loose pieces out from "inside" the front bumper?

Okay, you can stop laughing now! :D

I not sure how to get them out, I just bought a new set at discount auto parts for a few bucks. Forum member said I can get them there and sure enough I was able to.

If you have an air compressor, blow them out:biggrin:

Don't think I can "blow" 'em out...

If I apply air, they'll just go further inside the bumper, maybe blown all the way to the ends (losing them for sure). Right now, they are somewhere below the top license plate holes in the front, sitting on the bottom inside.

So again my question-- is the bumper one piece, including back, or can I get inside from the back? Advice?

Okay, resume laughter...

The backing does unbolt but it's a pita. There are a lot of bolts. There are some holes in the backing and you may be able to tilt the bumper back and forth to get the plastic bumper to come out but that's a long shot.

does anybody have a pic of these spacers or i would have to get 20 of them at buick...

eBay Motors: Auveco Part # 8945 GM License Nut Spacer (item 4548430541 end time Jan-25-07 22:08:25 PST)

Something like this? Note, this is an EXAMPLE, only. It is NOT the OEM piece, if that matters. Have you checked your friendly GM dealer - the parts counter usually has a drawer full of LP hardware (in large part because sales is always in need of it) and it may be the counterman has a few of these and would just give you 2...

They are likely inside the (bumper) reinforcement, necessitating that the bumper be removed from the car and taken apart.

The bumper comes apart - I have done it, and it's not a huge deal, but I certainly would not take my bumper apart because a couple of ears from a plastic spacer broke off and fell inside... After all, you can't see them, you can't hear them, they're not going to promote rusting, etc. - pretty benign in the grand scheme of things.

Also, factor that taking the bumper off and apart may precipitate more, bigger problems. Chiefly, broken or stripped bumper bolts and nuts (these tend to rust together on even very low miles, sunny days examples) or damaging the finish on the bumper attempting to get these apart. This is not to say these are the only things that can go wrong.

Thats them. GM used those on a lot of cars. I would think they would be hanging on the HELP rack or in the Dorman/Motormite drawers at PepBoys.

Thanks-- one more Q related to this thread...

How does the front rubber impact strip attach to the front bumper? Are there tabs molded into the rubber, or is it surface glued, etc?

If I replace the rub strip, can I do so without removing the front bumper? Just pry one end and yank?

Thanks in advance for your expertise on this.

Bumper strip?

The replacement strips have round unthreaded studs molded as part of the rubber. There must be some some sort of press on spring clip, but have not looked yet.....so..... good question.

Maybe Strike or Turbofish have a quick answer, they are walking manuals IMHO. Kinda like TR co-MVPs.

On the front strip there are 4 pinch clips tbove the park lamps that the tits press into. The rest of the tits have what is called a speed nut or self cutting nut holding them onto the bumper.

you will have to take off the front bumper 13 mm socket 8 nuts and use a jack to hold up the bumper as it will fall and chip the paint on the bumper fillers. then use 11 mil socket to get the 8 speed nuts off you will see the difference from the bumper bolts and the strip nuts. and if you need new sped nuts they are 1/4 inch at the help section of the parts store.
