trying to pinpoint valvetrain noise and some bad oil pressure,
so we got the intake off, brought to tdc and my biggest feeler guage,.040" is to not big enough for the clearence of the plunger to top of lifter

however the pushrods seem to have less than 0 lash at this point, can wiggle side to side and rotate, though not much up and down movement

what do you think?

i used adj pushrod checker and came up with needing something about ..030" longer than what we have wich is x.675"

just doesnt seem like both are going together
if i went by the lifter check method i would end up with a shorter pushrod

if i throw the adjustable in there give it the zero lash and add the .030"-.040" i need a longer pushrod

what gives

am i looking at this wrong???

any help would be greatly appreciated ,car is daily driver and apart as we speak.prepared to do an engine overhaul here but stopping at the top end before we go further

thanks

oh ya check this out

noted that on one side of lifters, one out of the 6 we could push the plunger in with our fingers

the other 5 we couldnt by hand

is this significant??

thanks

Take a hard look at the lobes of the camshaft. Too much clearance could be a sign of a wiped lobe. But 0.40 is about the correct preload. How low was the hot idle oil pressure?

Hi Mark, pressure is around 5 psi or so i think when hot, y26 chime in here if i am wrong

thanks

5-10 psi hot idle is pretty low. Should be about 20. I ran mine for quite a while with 5-10 at idle due to a bad front cam bearing. When the rpms came up, it went to 50-60. It did not hurt it. How is the hot oil pressure at 3000 rpm's? Sounds like you have excessive clearance somewhere.

Hi Mark, i think he is getting decent #'s up aroun the criusing area, not sure bout 3k but 2-2.5k is around 40+ i believe

ha s the hivolume/pressure cover

we were hoping to find something up top, while anticipating an overhaul..but am a little green troubleshooting low oil pressure and some top end noise

thanks

I don't think those numbers are low enough to cause noise, but I could be wrong. These numbers are from a quality mechanical guage, right?

the guage is an autometer mechanical style

well according to y26 its still noisy with the higher rpm/oil pressure

could we be looking at two unrelated problems here?

maybe i should start by asking," can lifters or valvetrain be the cause of low oil pressure???"

You shouldn't be able to push that plunger in by hand, so it might be bad, or the low oil pressure situation is causing it to not pump up. Lifters will get noisy if they don't get adequate oil. It sounds like your clearances are loose somewhere, maybe drop the pan and have a look at the bearings. Good luck

Hmmmmmm. Maybe that lifter is not pumping up causing the noise and their is some excess clearence somewhere causing the low idle oil pressure? I guess you could try putting a new lifter on it and seeing if the noise goes away. But then that may wipe the cam......... Don't know what else to suggest except tear it down and check it out. Good Luck,
