Okay so I've had a problem with the car not making full boost and i've elminated exhaust leaks, the turbo is good (no shaft play) btw its a TE60. I was using the stock style adjustable wastegate and the car would only make 20psi with it cranked all the way down and with the RJC boost controller crank all the way down. I thought maybe the puck wasn't sealing so I used some metal wire and manually wired it the wastegate shut with the wastegate arm disconnected. Now the car made 24psi and I let off. but it was slow as hell to spool. Is that normal since nothing is controling the the air but itself?

What downpipe are you using?

If you have the stock elbow, have you varified the puck seals over the entire hole with at least 1/8th of a inch.. The puck doesnt stick or wedge in the hole does it?

Also, what is the length of the wastegate rod when its tightened down as much as you have it? Is it homemade cut to length and possibly too long?

We gotta figure it out!

PS, on my car, the RJC was and still is cranked in all the way, stretched spring, and shimmed it up. The most boost i could get was 22psi on a cold night. 20psi on a 55° day.

I cut the wastegate and threaded it, now with just a tad more tension on it, the boost comes right on up on a 55° day.
Nothing else changed.

How hard would it be to pull the elbow off the turbo and check the puck alignment?

If it's the stock elbow/puck trying to cover a larger hole in a drilled out TE60 housing that could be the problem for sure.

I lost a turbo on Friday doing just that. Troubleshooting a low boost situation.

Ate that thing right up and all I saw before the horrendous screech was 20 psi.

Granted, it was a 20+ year old stock turbo - but it used to regularly see 20 psi at the track with no problems and no shaft play.

How many miles were on the turbo before it locked up?

I think precision sells or can rebuild the stocker if you wanted....
They make decent power:biggrin:

157,000 miles.

No....it's time for the big boy. I have the fuel system to support a GE turbine.

I am going to post on the Turbocharger forum for suggestions.

first of all you are going to need a 2800 or higher convertor with that turbo as your signature states. second your wastegate puck is probably to small for that hole thats why if you cover the hole with alot of tension the boost is squeezing by the puck causing somewhat of a restriction alowing you some boost. i put on a ta-49 and couldnt get my boost past 15 unless i cranked down on the wastegate and also it was slow to spool. measured the hole it was 1 inch and the puck was smaller thatn 1inch so i had to get a thdp problem solved. take off your elbow and put red lipstick on your puck and install elbow and smack your puck open and closed and take off elbow and see how your alignment is and also measure your hole and puck and report back

I have a THDP my question is this...since nothing is controlling the wastegate would it be reaaaalllllly slow to spool. I've got a 3200 10" convertor so thats not a problem.

The turbo wastegate hole could have been ported to a ATR external gate.

If you have a convertor and its slow to spool the te60 along with a RJC bleeder valve, then it really could be the wastegate hole.
Or a too long length rod.

What is the length of the rod when in the fully retracted position, off the swing arm, to the center line of the ilet of the rod end?

I picked up a HD wastegate acuator and problem is solved. THe boost is right where I want it and the spool is insane wooohoooo time for some track time!!!

Try a manual boost controller too. Boost will come up really fast with one of those. :)

glad you found your problem. i agree get a rjc bleeder valve and it will spool insanely fast
