This is more of an informational post than anything else.
I've been running this LS1 MAF for several years now, and it had performed flawlessly. It's what took me to my 11.60's :D

However, couple of months ago the car started acting funny with some wierd symptoms!!!!
During part throttle accel. (1/2-3/4 throttle) there was a lot of surging/chugging, and when monitoring DS files there were a lot of MAF drop outs, timing spikes, and weirdest of all, there was this huge knock retard spike right in the middle of third gear (the more throttle the worst it was), where nothing was happening???
Even with all these problems, I took it to the track a month or so ago and ran in pure street trim (gas 93, tires street, timing19, boost20, etc) and with that huge knock retard spike the car ran 12.80's at 104.5

I was getting really ticked, this along with the "non working" turn signal problem I couldn't find, I came close to selling the darn thing  (not really).

After checking about everything there was to check, I decided to change out the LS1 MAF for my spare 3" LT1 MAF (I don't know why).
BANG!!!!! Everything is now running perfectly and the car is it's usual tire melting self!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had forgotten that a couple months ago, I had dropped the LS1 MAF on the garage floor (from a couple feet). Even though there was no visible damage, the electronic damage was multifacetted, and getting worse each week.

I couldn't believe that a dieing MAF could cause so many problems and seemingly unrelated. The huge knock retard was the puzzler!!! But every single symptom I suffered before is cleared up.

Even though the car is screaming again (20# of boost and NO KR!) on pump gas, I can still feel the slight difference in part throttle response. The LS1 MAF is a killer in that area and I miss it.

Guess I'll have to try and track down another LS1 MAF

Get the R! Throw the MAF in the trash where it belongs. Glad to hear all is better. Bet you'll sleep better at night :D

Yeah, but did changing out the MAF fix your turn signal problem???

No ;)
But I did track that problem down a couple days earlier!!!!!! What a bizarre tale that was!!

Ummm, thanks, but no thanks.

I personally LOVE the convenience, tuneability, streetability, and closed loop operations of the LS1/LT1 MAF and Translator combo. It's way too smooth and silky to give up. The tuning and timing adjustments available and the new features in the Extenders are not to be believed.

The MAF problems weren't because I chose to run a MAF, they were because I chose to be clumsy and drop the darn thing

Be sure just to closely inspect the heated wire elements. It they look black they're dirty engough to need attention.

Even the finest coating of trash with cause what you've seen. Use a fingernail or lightly brush against the coil of the senseing elements to scrape any trash off of them.

The cottton swab, alky, may not be strong enough in all cases to clean the sensors.

Why not try the MAF in front of the throttle body?

We need someone with your expertise to give it a try.

Roger

Give this guy a call and tell him your in the Buick club and that I (Joe Reif) sent ya...I believe he sells to us for a percent or two above his cost which I've found to be lower than any vendor out there.
As a side note, at one time Mike Lict had these MAF's for a few bucks lower than my connection.

Larry Hinmon (Superior Chevrolet) 913-384-1550

Another side note, the 3.5" exhaust you sold me MANY years ago finally rusted off...literly! The muffler still lives though, it was on my buddy's Cummins diesel and sounded GREAT! That exhaust got more attention than any other part on my GN when I owned it...

Hmmm, that might be worth taking a closer look. Thanks Bruce.

Doesn't Bruce already have all that ground covered??
Besides, that would take plumbing chages, and a different IAC mounting boss. ($$$, something I'm short on now).
And finding anybody around this neck of the woods to make changes to the piping would be fruitless.

Dave,
Can you also give us the details of the fix of the turn signal problem as I might have the same problem. Thanks

I seriously doubt that anyone else shares the same problem, and you'll see why in my explanation, but here goes anyway. Here's the text in the turn signal problem thread explaining what I found

Salvage, THANKS for steering me in the right direction. I was so ticked off at the car I hadn't touched it in a couple weeks. Today I went back out and crawled under the dash, laying on my back, (on the seat because of the roll bar mount being in the way on the floor). My back will never be the same.
Anyway, I was looking around up there by the gear selector switch, and saw the open connectors where something used to be plugged in. Then right there in my face was hanging that connector. It had two dk blu wires into one side and a lt grn wire out the other.
OMG! I had forgotten that way back about 15 years ago when I installed the B&M shifter, I had gone under there and disconnected that switch and cut the lt grn wire to the backup lights (because this was years ago when I didn't know how to hook the shift column lever up to the tranny with the aftermarket lever in place).
Anyway, I had used one of those pinch splicers on one of the dk blu wires to supply 12v to the shifter's back up light micro switch.

My suspisions are that that connection probably has become corroded over the last 15 years somehow, and when loading the circuit, it somehow broke the circuit. After wiggling the connections and playing with it, the turn signals now work

I suspect that pinch connector must be on the dk blu wire going to the turn signals because the backups worked just fine.

So thanks again salvage!! this was truely a ball buster.

Thanks Dave. You're right, my problem won't be the same. I'll just have to keep looking.
