bare with me alittle while I try not to make a complete ass of myself with stupid questions. I recently poped a head gasket and since my motor has 80000 miles and a slight knock at idle I am rebuilding it. I pulled this weekend and have it on a stand in my work shop. I was wondering if it is better to buy a kit like the one postons sells(most everything included) or buy them separate from a vender. are the parts in postons kits elcheapos or quality parts? not asking anyone to slam any vendors just steer me in the right direction. Aside from the obvious machine work any tips on building this motor would be great. Thanks

If your original pistons are in good shape and the block doesn't need bored reuse them. Unless you are planning on running deep in the 10's. It would be helpful to know how fast you want to go.

So - to rebuild with the intent of never touching the 10s, not even 10.99, is there anything at all that should be rebuilt with better than stock parts?

i'm doing a rebuild now, with stock pistons. i also had a knock at idle, and found #1 cyl. bore sized wrong. i am currently having it sleeved si i don't have to buy new pistons. the only improvements i am making for a car that, as you were saying, will never go that fast are comp cams valvesprings, sealed power rings, but i am going back with a nylon timing gear and new chain. I am also porting the heads and smoothing the chambers. I'm ceramic coating all exhaust parts before the turbo, and am looking into an extra-hi-temp coating for the turbo exhaust housing.

I'm also dealing with a blown H/G

Was wondering if anyone has used or is planning on using ARP head bolts? Are they preferred over the stock TTY head bolts. Does anyone have the vendor contact info (ph # or website) so I can order a set of ARP head bolts.

Also I want to replace my valve springs with Comp Cams 980, which vendors carries these springs?

I bought the ARP's, head and rod. the head bolts are nice cause there are 3 lengths instead of 2 like the stock ones. 40 bucks. any local speed shop can get them, Summit or Jegs too probably. don't hold me to that though, i have not called summit or jegs.

thanks for the replys . I would like to stay in the 11's. I was thinking of buying a rebuild kit from postons the bearings, lifters and cam should as good as any where else right? what cam do yall recomend for my combo . also whant to change out my stock torq. converter to a higher stall some input on which stall would also be great . sorry about all the dumb questions just tring to pick a few brains before i throw good money away on bad decisions

I would have the crank magnafluxed and turned if need be and all the rods resized and use ARP rod bolts and head bolts. You'll get 50 different opinions on the head bolt issue. TTY , ARP bolts, ARP studs. They are all good. I like the ARP bolts myself. Have the line bore and the main bore sizes checked carefully. If you do replace the pistons have in balanced. Maybe have some mild port work done to the heads and a good valve job. Basically just normal machine work. And make sure they hold the tolerances on the crank to the tight side.
