I'm looking at purchasing a 1987 GN with 85,000 miles on it. I nego. a price of $7000. Interior is in great shape, body is about a 8 out of 10. Motor seems fine except it has an aftermarket radical cam and vibrates a lot. Is this a good price? Also have a few concerns about the car. 1) Brakes are mushy. Is the brake boost the problem, master cylinder, or do lines need to be bled - do these cars have a history of brake problems when they get older? 2) Oil gauge doesn't register when the car is idling. Goes up slightly when engine is reved. Owner said it has a new oil pump and that it just a faultly gauge - any thoughts? I appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Did he tell you what the after market radical cam is?? And what else does he have done to the motor with an after market cam in it? If there is no problem with the oil pressure that sounds like a good price. See if he'll let you hook up another oil pressure gauge. It's a pretty simple hook up. As for the price, GN's around my area in good condition with about the same mileage for about 9000 to 10000 $$. The price seems decent.

Get a real working oil gauge pronto and verify the pressure BEFORE settling on a price (or purchasing the car at all). Oil pressure is life to an engine9like your blood). Without it you will be looking at a rebuild before you get it home.
It is NOT normal for these engines to vibrate/shake even with a "radical" cam...If it is only a big cam, pull it out and replace it with a smaller one...turbo cars do not need a big cam ( he is lying to you about the big cam IMO)

7000 for an 85k GN is a good price IF everything seems OK - CHECK FOR RUST - floor boards, doors, deck lid, 1/4s and roof area. There is no easy or cheap solution for rust perferation.

Yes they have a History of brake problems that are easily and cheaply (under $200.00) solved. I wouldn't be to concerned about that. Just be aware it will have to be fixed ASAP

That "radical cam" line may be a coverup for some other internal damage. By all means, verify that oil pressure and go from there!

Thanks for the info everyone. How do they check the oil pressure independent from the car's gauge?

A different gauge has to be hooked up.
Take it to a service shop and have it done - at least you know the gauge will be fairly accurate
