Need opinions...how should I have my rear built for running 11s?

It is in the shop as we speak and I'm wondering about a couple things:

Should I run c-clip elims or not?

Rebuild the stock posi or go to an eaton? If going to an eaton, should I replace the stock axles with 30 spline?

MAIN Question: I don't plan on running 10s (famous last words), so do I REALLY need the elims and larger axles???

I've searched the board and everyone seems to set-up in reference to running 10s (when NHRA says you have to anyway).

Let me hear what you think.

Mark, I don't have any experience w/Eaton, but the stock posi should be plenty for 11's--- just freshen it. I am running a "US/Strange" carrier w/Moser axles. No c-clip eliminater, 'cause I hate leaks. I also added a TA rr girdle ( this is a beautiful piece ). Boxed stock uppers and lowers w/ poly bushings. This has been good for two years in the 10's, and after an inspection this past fall, has shown minimal wear. HTH Brian

Well, the driveline guy is going to double check to see if he can go to 30 spline using the stock unit, so I might just do that. However, it sounds like it is a game of chance when it comes to the axles breaking.

...some break at 15s (rare), some run strong in the 10s...but either way, it looks like I should go with aftermarket axles. I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should worry about the car being hammered by an axle that gives way.

..and it seems like everyone is running this girdle thing...I'll need to do some searching on that to get a pic...unless someone has one to post, I'd appreciate it :)

I'm assuming it has something to do with stopping the axle housing from flexing?

Anyway...thanks

The TA rr girdle supports the carrier bearing caps. It also adds rigidity to the center section. Good axles are the key to success.

most would say "no" the stock rear has been in the 10s many times. our 11 sec gn still has the original 172K mile 87 rear end fluid. my race car has c-clip eliminators, rear girdle, spool, 33 spline mosers....its overkill for mid 10's but it wont break.

Well...the price is scary for doing the elims conversion, so I'm leaning more toward staying with the stock posi and "hopefully" being able to bump it up to a 30 spline. If not, I'll get the eaton.

That said, will the 30 spline do me fine for 11s??

....and if one day I decide to make it a 10s car....then I'll have money for the conversion, even though I'll be spending money twice on the same thing.

maltman, if your stock rear is in good shape, all i'd do is get a TA rear end girdle, change the fluid and be done. save your money. its all pretty much for nothing doing 30s and a new posi....thats not what goes, usually its the c-clips that break. so that being said when your knocking on the 10s door then build the whole rear end right.

One other note. Rear end longivity is dependent on a few things. If your not running a T-brake and you keep your 60 fts above 1.50, you'll probably never have an issue w/breakage. Try to gain ET w/ motor HP and not w/ hard launches.

Great info guys.....thanks alot :)

Your opinions sound great because the save me some serious $$$ :D

Lot's of good advice.
If you're going to be running 11's, then the stock rear should hold up fine.
I replaced my axles with 28 spline Mosers (for no particular reason)
My clutches and steels still looked new after 160,000 miles so left them alone.

I am going to be putting a Moser rear girdle on pretty soon though. Just because there's so many miles on the rear end now.
