Gentlemen (and Ladies)
I'm in the process of rebuilding after the horrible destruction of my motor a couple of months ago. Some of you might remember. I had to replace everything except heads and need some guidance on cam selection. Here's what I have so far: 109 block bored .030 over, line honed, Speedpro powerforged pistons with plasma moly rings, Billet center mains, stock ported heads w/ three angle valve job, stock crank turned .010, Clevite 77 rod and cam bearings. I bought a Federal Mogul stock rebuild kit that included a stock cam and lifters but I'm not sure if that one is good enough. I'm not trying to run in the 10s but I want to have a good platform to build on in the future. My machinist thinks I should go with a Dutweiller cam to "wake it up a little". Do you guys think it's worth the extra expense, $300, for a car that will probably never see the track?? If not what cam is best for street use??
Also I have upgraded to a hotwired Walbro 340 and will upgrade injectors and chip when the motor goes back in. However I'll have to stick with the stock turbo til my wife gets over the shock of the cost of this rebuild!!! What do you guys think? Any comments or suggestions are very welcome. Sorry for the long post.

If your going for hot street, stay with the stocker or a little bigger (206-206).

No reason to go big for a primarily street driven car.

I agree, also look into the 204/214. it seems to be quite good. I am gonna try that one. I think you need more fuel pump to safely run 10's. double pumpers. what turbo/injectors are you gonna run?

cam???

Thanx guys for the inputs. I'm thinking I'll probably go with the cam that came with the kit. Federal Mogul says it's the same specs as the factory cam. Guess I'll have to trust them on this one. They've actually been pretty helpful. For now I'm staying with the stock turbo and either 36 or 42lb injectors due to finances. Have to wait to upgrade the turbo til after summer vacation/honeymoon! Been married for a month and the wife says the car is more important than she is!! Guess I need to spend a little money on her now!! I just can't win!!!!!!! Thanx again guys. Any other upgrade suggestions while I have this thing apart? Power plate??Ehxhaust??

The staock turbo can take you along way...
Make sure you have an adjustable fuel pressure reg.
I'm a fan of the power plate myself...
Injectors - go as big as you can (with in reason)...50lb would be nice but 42.5s will go ALONG way and they are cheap (deep into 11s)
HRP&S motor mounts
A GOOD converter. You won't believe how much difference it makes going to a good 9" converter.
make sure you use the roller cam button and a steel replacement timing chain.
Relace ALL rubber vac lines. turbo heat kills them and vac leaks cause alot of (easily solved) headaches
A tunable ECM setup (MaxEffort or trans plus system) It's nice not to have to chip search.

Oh yeah - if you don't have a scan tool, buy one FIRST

cam???

Thanx zam70,

Sounds like you have a lot of experience with these cars. This is my first one so I've got a lot to learn. Gettin there!! I hadn't even thought about the converter. I did order a scanmaster a couple of days ago. So that part is covered. What does the roller cam button do?? And which converter do you guys recommend for street only use?? Sorry for the stupid questions but I've had mostly imports in the last few years. Any advise is greatly appreciated!!!

This is my first one too (2 years now) lotsa research and a little trial and error. read read read and ask alot of questions...milk the peoples brains. If it makes sense, it's probably right. Watch out for the snake oil!

roller cam button keeps from wearing the front cover. Doesn't help performance but it helps longevity and it is CHEAP insurance ($12.00 I think and no extra work)

Converter? Depends. I run a 3200 9" ultra light from Bowlers transmission (it's a new design he's playing with, might not be available to the general public yet...he's still got the typicals available now though). www.bowlertranmission.com
Give him a call, tell him Scott sent ya and he can dial one up for you. All his converters are custom built to each specific application so get ready to answer ALOT of questions about your car. He's got great prices (low overhead), even better service and he is a die hard car guy. I wouldn't buy from anyone else.
A converter can make a good combo great. Even at the 3200 stall, It drives perfect on the street.

Glad to help out...feel free to e-mail me!

Scott
