Ok, while my motor was out, I had the valve cover, intake, front cover, and oil pan gaskets all replaced. The motor has approx. 60,000 miles on it. Would it be safe to use synthetic oil now in terms of having any oil leaks? Or was that all a myth about having oil leaks when you change from dino oil to synthetic (if I never had all my gakets replaced)???

And if I switch, which would be the best syth. oil to go with?? Thanks

Ok, one more time lol. that fact, is eons old. it used to be, back in the 80's, that if you changed over from dino to synth, youd get some leaks. for two reasons. first off, any petroleum product would swell most substrates cuz of course, its a petroleum product (ever do the expandable earplug in gasoline experiment in science?) well, with many months of dino oil brushing across those gaskets, it would sorta swell them in place, and make them work a tad better.
also, most normal momo's dont keep their engine clean by frequent oil changes, using good quality filters, and doing their annual engine flushes like they should. Most people just throw the cheapest filter they can on, they wait zillions of miles between oil changes, and NEVER flush their engine, allowing alll sorts of coked oil, gunk and what have you, to coat their nooks and crannies. well, now switch a a synth, which doesnt expand gaskets that much, plus, most of em have some sort of detergent in them, slowing flushing all that built up crap in those engines, an bam, you have two reasons why theres now a thin film of oil coating their crossmember, oil pan, and trans pan when i go in the pit to change these peoples oil,.....that hasn't been changed in 6000 miles...
Well, thats old gasket technology. most gaskets nowadays dont expand that much anyways. these people that came in the shop, switch between 'conventional' and synth all the time, due to how much money they felt like spending that day. no oil leaks. The only people that leak oil in the shop, are the really neglectful ones, that just drive their cars till they die, and then throw it in the gutter, and get another jalopy. ive seen oil pan bolts finger tight.. MANY times in the pit.
None of that is an issue with these buicks. I mean I see guys here deliberate on whats the absolute best quality gaskets i can buy etc etc... as fanatical as you guys are with your buicks, i think the last thing you have to worry about, is an oil leak. we take too good care of our cars here. The only leaks ive seen with our cars, is people takin their stock oil pans, and boltin em back up, while kinda bent, and tightening them in a non star pattern (like you bolt you wheel on) and that was only with old beat up oil pans. I'm sure most of us dont run old beat up oil pans here so, i wouldnt worry.
The best synth oil out there? is amsoil hands down. Though mobile ones synth isnt far behind either. I havent read any test reports on redline yet, but ive heard nothing but good things with them too. But, I see a lot of guys run rotella, or some oil with a decent zinc content in it. you know for the anti scuff properties. I say, if your engine is fairly new (under 20,000 miles) run a good synth, and change it religiously every 2500 miles. If not, you could try that rotella too. Use a wix or mobile one oil filter. purolator or acdelco if you cant find the better ones.
You can try runnin a really powerful magnet on the bottom of the oil pan too. Theres also the remote oiler thingy option as well. Then, theres the biggie oil filter adapter from rjc, but, i heard some people talking about it reducing your oil pressure. I'm not sure how, if youve added the appropriate amount of oil, but who knows..

Hey, thanks for the info! So, with my situation (especially with all new gaskets), I should not be seeing ANY oil leaks (assuming the gaskets are on correctly) if I switch to a snthetic oil. Also, isnt changing synthetic every 2,500 miles a little to soon? I would think you can go a little longer than that...I use dyno oil now (Valvoline--heard that was the best dyno oil) and change it religiously every 3,000 miles...I figure I can change the synthetic at least every 3,000 miles??

Yes, i do agree that a good synth (there are crappy ones) oil takes a bit to 'expire' if you will but...our engines are high rev, turbo charged systems. they beat their oil up a lot quicker. I know i know there are thousands of people that had their engines for 2439873403 miles, and used just dino oil, and changed it every 3000 miles with a fram filter, and the engines still going but, why risk it? redoing our engines is expensive (unless youre a machinist by trade)_gotta take care of em. :)

Try Redline oil. Has a better additive package than amsoil, according the the virgin oil analysis on Bobistheoilguy.com forum

153k miles, just recently switched to synthetic, haven't noticed any more oil leaks than what were there before. (Switched oil pan gasket & rear main seal twice, and with the high boost, it still seeps some oil)
