I purchased an 86 GN with 25,000 original miles last year. It is completely original and I haven't had much time to add any performance mods let alone drive it. I am in the Army and have been deployed to Afghanistan/Iraq for 25 of the last 37 months. With that said I am thinking of some things I want to do. I have dealt with the chassis issues already with all the standard braces and bushings. They make a huge difference. My powermaster went out and after much debate and surfing of this site I have converted to vacuum. I am not completely satisfied, but I am happy the car at least stops when I push the break pedal. The biggest question I have right now is in ref to tuning. The guy I bought it from gutted the CAT and it has a Kenne Bell cold air intake and a hyper-tech chip from way back. I get a lot of detonation at WOT during shifts. What should I do about this? Is the scan tool only option for helping make adjustments or is there something better if you have a laptop? My next project is tacking the rear main seal. after that I hope to start performance mods-new fuel pump, reg, hotwire, adjustable WG actuator, THDP, 2 3/4 SS Cotton exhaust, PI converter, bigger turbo and injectors. My plan is just bolt ons so that I can always put the car back to original condition.

Thanks, Jim

1st...........

do the fuel pump, and hot wire, it could contribute to detonation.
I like alchy, it lets me run pump gas,
listen to what everyone has to say, and you won't go wrong!
good luck, and welcome aboard!

and thanks for your service to our country!!!!

A scanmaster is the way to go, at least in my opinion... I like that it'always there and on and noone really is going to bother to steal it. A laptop is bulky, and you have to divert your attention while driving unless you're logging- still easy to steal and smms like a hassle... (at least for daily driver type use)

That said, get a scanmaster and post your numbers. There's lots of people on this board with tons of knowledge to contribute. Might turn out to be a matter of tweaking here and there.

Fuel pump/hotwire, Adjustable FPR, liquid filled FP gauge- these are a must immediately. The the THDP and misc. exhaust pieces...

Good Luck.

After the fuel get rid of that chip. In the beginning they just threw a butt load of timing at it. If you can afford it get a Turbo tweak. If not get a Thrasher for cheap till you upgrade injectors then get a Turbotweak. Chip technology has come a loooooong way since the hypertech. Good Luck

Thanks, I appreciate everyone’s help. Once I get the Scanmaster I will post the numbers for recommendations.

Technology has changed so much that I would certainly change that chip. TurboTweak and Full Throttle Speed make great chips and give you the ability to change certain parameters. I would purchase injectors and chip at the same time so you do not have to purchase two chips. Decide what turbo you want and then get injectors that will work with that turbo. i.e. supply enough fuel. What turbo are you looking at?

Mine was stock (86 T-type) except for a K&N filter, I added: Fuel pump & Hotire from Full Throttle, Scanmaster, 50lb injectors (for future upgrades, and the old ones were old) Razor Alky, KB adj fpr, Russ Merrit Customs plug wires and a TT chip..Car Rocks now on pump gas and stock IC,Turbo and exhuast.

Thanks for your Service
