I just got a new shortblock. it has a ding in the head deck near one of the alignment pins. Am I going to be blowing bubbles as soon as i get into some boost? Im hoping that it will be ok. check it out.

Also the main cap seems lower than it should be compared to the surface the oil pan mounts to. Am I missing something? its about 3/16" lower.
Take a look.

Id hate to waste time on assembly so your opinions are greatly valued.

I agree about the rear cap . never seen one that sat that low off of the pan rail .

I'm just wandering if it is the cap or did the machine shop take it off of the block???? If it is just the cap that can be fixed with another cap. But if it is the block then it gets more interesting!!!!
I would ask your Machine shop when they checked the line bore, when they put in the studs, did they have to do any machining. If they say Yes, Ask them if they machined the rear main cap or did they machine the block.

Good luck,

Puddin

Both issues you have there a pretty bad. Definitely get that stuff fixed before going any further, and get a different engine builder too. Whoever did that either doesn't care or doesn't know anything about Buicks.

Both are really bad. You dont want to know what the fix is. :frown:

OK I will just say it. It is going to have to come apart and that deck will need to be fixed. either welded or decked off but the decking may cause new problems. The main cap is likely trash and you will beed to get a new one and a new align bore/hone. It may be easier to start with a different block and for sure a different machine shop.

I noticed the two center mains.. they put that sucker on a boring bar and had their way with it. And by the looks.. I bet they cut heavy into the block registers.

Be happy they left you some visual evidence.

ohhhh my  wow is all I can say .. listen to what others have said

Yeah, definately bad news.

Might be time for a new Block, is there warranty? who the hell sends an engine out like that??

I got the block off ebay as a second hand "new". The machine work was supposedly done by a reputable builder on the east coast. I am working on getting the paperwork before i talk to the builder.

the block has new center steel mains. im hoping the meat came off of the rear main. thats what makes sense anyway. ill have to check and see if the front main is that low also.

That mark on the deck may not be a problem if its outside the fire ring of the gasket. The bottom end is a different story. I wouldnt trust that for a second. The registers for the caps or the caps themselves have been cut too much. Im suprised the thrust main is able to hold the bearing insert properly. I would do a complete teardown and have a known good shop check everything. Theres probably a lot more wrong that we cant see.
