I have a tta. My motor is stock 60k on car. Changing the front cover to a EB cover. My question is about the timing gears-chain. Would I be best to replace the aluminum-nylon gear with another or change to a steel replacement? What are the advantages and disadvantages to changing to steel thanks

Change the timing set and don't reuse the little plastic tension . Double roller chain

I'm not picking on a newbie, but this site has many great mentors who are willing to help, and this site also has many posted results of yours and many answered questions.
If you are going to keep it stock use a single timing chain since double chain usage for greater hp than stock hp

I used this Timing chain set, where as many uses other types – Cloyes #C-3018K- E-Bay

New tensioner – NAPA http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=NTP95158_0191974675 - $4.84

Updated cam button NAPA http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=NTP95189_0191974674 - $15.14

Front cover gasket set – NAPA http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Result.aspx?Ntt=tcs45930&Ntk=Keyword&Nty=1&N=599001+101987+50008+2 -- $9.99

Do a "timing chain" search, read and you will have your answer and more questions to be ask

Personally (with a flat tappet cam) I like the crappy nylon coated aluminum gear. They run quiet and have a tentioner to help keep harmonics in check.

Granted they're so junky you have to change them every 20 years or 140,000 miles......

Based on my personal experience, if you run a steel top gear your magnetic drain plug will have an afro every time you change the oil. Also when the steel top gear strips out, you'll find out your timing cover got chewed all to hell (and you end up having to get a new cover and write a how-to oil pump article :) ). On the upside the afro stops when switching back to a nylon coated gear.

You are describing the cam gear as "Steel", and this is only true in the more expensive timing chain sets?

The less expensive, actually cheap replacement timing sets, do not have a steel cam gear, it is cast and will wear rapidly especially if the valve springs are upgraded over stock.

There are only a very few timing chain sets with billet cam gears which are priced over $100, and they are extremely durable and long lasting.

The nylon gear set must be used with caution if elevated spring pressure is used.
