tryin to find out which of my two engines is the original block. where should i look for numbers and what part of the vin should they match.both have a casting number of 25526109, they have diff numbers by the timing cover.

They match the production number last digits of the VIN, past the first 4 in it, should match the numbers part on the dash mounted placque or RPO code sticker VIN.

Number is stamped on the block on a boss about even with the second tranny bolt on the drivers side of the motor in the back near the tranny mounting area.

Stamped vertically on that boss in a small about 10 sized font, lightly stamped too.

Use a rag with some gas or solvent on it to wipe the area clean and a good light and a mirror helps if you are under the car.

ok now that i found that i looked up the numbers on gnttype.org cause they were one number off
4hp436789 on block
7hp436789 on car
now gnttype.org refers to that ninth digit in the vin (or the first number on the block) as "check digit". i would have assumed that this meant this is not the original block but the 436789 part is the serial number and should be unique to each car right? so what do they mean by check digit? my other block also starts in a 4 but has different serial number, do all blocks start with 4?

436789, that is unique to each car, excepting the 4 in front, all the VINS start with 4, so your car is the 36,789th G body.

As far as the check digit is concerned there's not too much info. out there about it, none in the service manual other than to say it's a check digit.

I wouldn't worry about the first 4 and 7 being different since the VIN number is the same to the actual build number of the car. Everything past that last 4 digit is identical.

The number 4 on the block just refers to what car division that motor went into. The last 6 digits are the car sequence. It was possible for a Regal and a Cutlass or MC to share the same last 6 digits of the VIN. The 3rd character of the VIN will tell you what division is what.
