While you are correct about norton and macfee "free crap" is some of the most effective out there because there are a holes that create viruses...

there are people that write programs to remove them as a service to the public or because they are bored and its a challenge and they dont feel the need to charge people to use them...

For instance the windows safety scanner Windows Live OneCare safety scanner: Free online tool for PC health and safety

Is free and made by microsoft and it scans for viruses( protection) (cant always remove all of them) but the (clean up scan) is a free registry repair that you can use to repair the damage done to your puter by viruses after you have removed them and gets it operating correctly again..

Who better to fix windows than the people who made it in the first place i recommend using it every so often even if you havent had a virus to correct small issues you may not know exist...try it it may suprise you:eek:;)

I'm going to disagree.
If MicroSoft was so good at writing programs and code, there wouldn't be "holes" for virus writers to exploit.
Eugene Kapsersky said it best a few years ago....Bill Gates and his crew do not know how to write an good operating system.
His A/V program takes a bit of getting used to though.
Even Dad loves it and he's computer illiterate at 73 years old.
Go figure.
His computer came with a Norton free trial so he's tried both.

I've been using Avast Anti-Virus for over 3 years now and I've never had an issue since then. Before that, I had Norton and sometimes it would let things slip by. There is so much free legal software out there that people would have to be stupid to pay for it. I'm sorry, but when you can go on sites like Kim Kommando and other nationally syndicated computer advocacy that show you what's good and what's not...I don't pay for anything anymore. Avast and AVG usually out perform the commercially available AV software too.

Avast for anti-virus.
Spybot for malaware and adaware.
Komodo for the Firewall.
And run ccleander occassionally to keep it all running smoothly.

It's comodo Gordy. I sent the links to Ty some time ago and am suprised he hasn't used them. Superantispyware, comodo, and Avast are great and I haven't had an issue since I downloaded them. Regcure works wonders to fix a slow puter but it's like $20 to activate it. Very effective once you have it though.

Absolutely EVERY major operating system/software release has holes in it, period! Look up your favorite here I guarantee there is something in there for your OS of choice Secunia Advisories - Vulnerability Information - Secunia.com. As you add usability and functionality from a network perspective, bad things can make their way in fairly easily as more exploitable code is visible to malicious programs.

The middle tier AV programs provide great performance while not being exposed to the harsh resource usage an overdeveloped or bloated code that mostly follows the high end commercial installs.

Yes some free programs are great, it took me some time before I was willing to accept that some free things are good.... like why would somebody give away a free operating system.

On my main laptop, I use Trend Micro.

I use AVG on my back up/XFI laptop (Trend Micro can't run on Windows 2000).

I only feel good when I pay out the ass for something guys.......

So that's why you're married then? LOL:biggrin: HOw's the puter working now?

Well I am at work so it is working good, that antivirus I bought didnt slow it down a bit like the Norton did:eek:

I've been there.
That's where I found out about Apple's "security" in 2005.
Uh yeah.

If something was put together it can be taken apart they may not be great at writing operating systems but im sure they can fix what they created is all im sayin and im not payin for it unless its beneficial to...like i said i got five virus scan /cleaners and i only pay for one...

I'll PM you my phone number and you can send me exorbitant amounts of cash for telling you where to find freeware if it makes you feel better about it.
