I was out to "finally" fix the oil cooler adapter leak on my engine, and found this:
bypass%20valve.jpg

Who knows how long the bypass has been open, preventing the filter from properly filtering the engine oil! This is something everyone should check. If the bypass is open, the oil flows around the filter rather than through it. This condition can't be seen unless you remove the adapter and inspect it.

Something to look for next time you change the oil filter.
And, I think I finally found a permanent way to keep the oil from leaking past that O ring...time will tell.

I thought that the valve was there to allow bypass of the cooler, not the filter? If that valve opens, it still flows thru the filter, and I thought the pressure spring the the pump would bypass the entire assembly???

Yeah, that just bypasses the oil cooler only. Any oil that goes through the oil cooler or the oil cooler bypass has to go through the oil filter to get out (well, unless it goes through a bypass built into the oil filter itself).

The rubber nubbin' thing that's in the oil pump cover, that bypass will allow oil to get to the engine while bypassing the filter.
