Just got in from an 150 mile trip and my odometer stopped working and ticking about 4 miles away from my house. How can I fix it?

Pop the cluster trim, remove the four cluster screws, take the cluster out & unscrew the speedo cable. Disconnect the small inline boost\tach connector in the dash also. Four more screws hold the lens on, & that's as far as I've gone. Should be pretty straight forward at that point, maybe a bad tooth on the odometer gear. Maybe 30 minutes to that point, not too bad to at least see what parts you need if any.

For parts you can go to: Speedometer Service Co :: Welcome

Good luck.

Wow! The information that John has shared is very good and looks easy to follow! I'll be trying this out soon..

John is awesome...I have tried this and it is very TEDIOUS work not sure if there is a way to keep from wearing/fading the numbers on the drums from handling. I would recommend nitrile gloves while diss/assembly and u gotta pay really close attention how the sucker comes apart/goes back together. I thought it was a major PITA......just fair warning. and after all that I had a little plastic tab break right as I was installing the last drum on the assembly so mine still does not work

I'd just pull it out as mentioned. The problem will probably be evident and perhaps easy to fix. If you have a u-pull type yard near you, you can find whatever parts you need. Incidentally, 81 thru 85 Rivs have the same speedo unit w/trip odometer... except for normally non-functioning TR boost/tach option. Pick yourself a whole extra unit for about $15. ;)
