can this be done without lifting the motor? I screwed mine up putting the timing cover back on. Just wondering if I can do it by sliding under the car or if I need to take to to the shop.

it MIGHT come out without jacking up the engine or anything if the crank is turned the right way, but at the very worst you'd need to take the engine mount thru bolts out, jack the engine up a couple of inches, and set it back down with some chunks of 2X4 jammed under the mounts. the pan should then come right out.
just make sure you don't jack the engine up into anything on the topside- like the fan hitting the top of the shroud or something like that.

I think I'm just going to drop the pan an inch and slide a new gasket around it

The oil pan will come off without jacking up the motor. You will have to remove the exhaust crossover. The oil pump pick-up may stop the pan from comming off so you may have to move the pan around once its loose to find the hole in the baffle. I may be forgetting something but its been about 10 years since I removed mine last.

I removed the pan many times and all I did was remove the crossover. Some guys claim they can remove it without even doing that. As stated above, you have to play with it to get the baffle past the pickup tube. The backend of the pan needs to go as far back as possible and down. Look at the link below and you will see what the baffle looks like.

much easier to lift the motor

I just put a new deep pan and gasket on yesterday. It is so much easier to remove the driver side motor mount bolt, jack the motor up off the pan with a piece of 2x4 against the pan to protect it, then place a wood block or something in the motor mount area to keep it lifted, remove jack, and replace gasket. The pan just falls off with that extra inch or two clearance, and new installation is simple without having to worry about tearing up the gasket.

And of course like stated, you need to remove the crossover. A good idea is to use some lock-tite on the two 8mm pick up tube bolts, a small thin amount of rtv on the gasket surfaces, and I ground the new gasket a little to match it to the pickup opening since the gasket was a little too big.
