I WAS WONDERING HOW HARD IS IT TO CHANGE THE OIL PAN GASKET ON AN 86-87 GN?I HAVE SOME SEEPAGE AND WAS WONDERING HOW BIG OF A JOB IT WAS,HOPEFULLY THE ENGINE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PULLED!!

Drain Oil, remove crossover pipe and oil pan. Depending on you car, you may or may not need to lift one side of the engine to get the pan off. Some guys have used their engine tie down to rock the engine over to one side. If you do need to jack up the engine use a block of wood (piece of 2x4) between the engine and the jack. Locate the jack at the front of the transmission pan. The three bolts at the front of the pan are smaller (10mm) than all the others. There is one bolt on the passenger side that secures a clamp that holds the tranny lines. This one can be a real pain to get off (try using an open end wrench.) There is a baffle in the oil pan and it can hang up on the oil pickup screen. If you have trouble removing the pan, try rotating the engine to get the counterweights out of the way. Removal of the converter dust shield may also provide more clearance. As a last resort, removing the pickup tube guarantees that the pan will come off.

Also might be a good idea to replace the rear main seals since the pan is off.

GOOD DESCRIPTION ABOVE. A VERY EASY JOB AS COMPARED TO ANY BRAND X. ONCE YOU TAKE OUT THE PAN BOLTS, IN MOST CASES YOU CAN PULL THE PAN OUT. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE JOB IN A COUPLE OR THREE HOURS........WORKING EASY!

10-4. It is an easy job. TURBOV6 pretty much nailed the procedure.

Make sure you check your Oil Pickup tube while you are in there. I bought a new Melling one for only 6.00. :D

For me setting the engine at TDC #1 seems to be the best position for removing the pan...have done this on several cars...make sure to put some duct tape on the bottom of the flywheel...the back pan rail will scrape the flywheel when removing...if the pan gets caught on the pickup...just reach your hand inside and gently push on the baffle to get it by the pickup...

thanks for the info guys! i'm gonna try cleaning the engine off real good and then check to make sure that's where the leak is coming from.
