Hi guys,

I recently bought a 1987 Buick gn. The oil pressure sensor was not working so I ended up removing it and throwing it away. When I start the car it leaks oil from where the sensor was screwed in. Does anyone know what size and style bolt I need so I can screw it in and for it to stop leaking oil. Its not really a leak, its more like a fountain of oil that shoots up. This was my first mistake with the car and didnt think too much of throwing the sensor away. Also does anyone know how I can get this puddle of oil off my driveway? I went ahead and soaked the oil up with a couple of rags. Now I just have a dry stain.

Thank you!

Wow... Well, welcome to the forum. I think those are half inch threads. If you go to autozone or Advanced Auto they got brass plug fittings of different sizes or they should have the replacement sensor, I think Advanced Auto is where I bought mine.

No need to clean the oil puddle up very well. Probably be cleaning some more later.

Soak it up with kitty litter. Then, when you are sure you are fixed up, go to the hardware store and get a bottle of Pour and Restore. That stuff works wonders.

Did the car even start with the oil pressure sensor out? Correct me if I wrong but I thought that the ECM needed a reading from the oil pressure sensor before it fires spark.

If you install a VDO oil pressure gauge & sending unit & let the factory sending unit wires just hang the car will start. I read it this morning & tried to figure out who was trying to get a rise out of us. :D

Best I can remember... the stock sensor was only for an idiot light on the dash..... and a secondary "path" for voltage to get to the fuel pump....... that is all.

It will run just fine with the sensor out..... but you do need to plug the hole....

Reality is.... you need an aftermarket oil pressure gauge so you really know what is going on..... not the stock idiot light.

stock oil switch threads are 1/4" npt

if you had an aftermarket sender it may have been 1/4npt or some newer senders use a reducer bushing to 1/8npt

im finding the stock sender switches are leaking more each year , 23 years old plastic in contact with oil and gas, back in the days of carbs i used to be lucky if the old gm senders made it 10 years
it would be wise to replace them while you can still find the switches or just remove them and go to a real oil gauge

and chuck leeper's question needs to be answered because we dont know if your sender was stock or aftermarket or what condition led you to say it doesnt work ,
you could have a more serious issue of actually low oilpressure not that low pressure is unusual just that the stock switch doesnt illuminate the dash oil light unless pressure is under 4psi.

if it was just not working and not leaking you should have left it there until you had a replacement
running it with a 1/2" hole in the oil path to the bearings you could have done more harm than just a dirty spot on the garage floor.
