I have been overhearing this for quite sometime now from a local Autoparts guy talking to customers who wanted to try synthetic oil. He basically talks them out of even thinking about it, saying that once they start putting it in there engine they can never use reg oil again because they do not mix. I have always forced myself to look the other way and mind my own business while thinking what the h*** is he talking about. Aint nothin worse than misinformation :mad:

Well........ figured Id better step back for a sec and see what the consensus here is. Am I trippin'? Is there any validity to his statements?
 
what do you think the semi-synthetic oils are made of? it's a mix of regular dino oil and synthetic oil...that guy is full of sh!t

and you can switch from dino to synthetic or synthetic to dino at any time you want...synthetic is genernally not recommended for very high mileage engines because they tend to find the leaks more...but on TRs I would always run synthetic due to the turbo...

Exactly what I was keeping myself from blurting out to the guy. Whenever I am struggling for cash, I at the very least run syntec BLEND.
 
Synthetics and regular oil mix just fine.

After a headgasket "event", I always fill the engine with regular oil for startup then change the oil and filter over to Mobil 1. Of course I always drop the pan to clean out the gasket gunk that gets sent there.

When I was in parts a long time ago I had customers say someone had told them that you couldn't switch back and forth, I just rolled my eyes and told them, the oil pump doesn't care whats in the pan, it will pump it, trust me.

It's not true of modern synthetics, but there was some truth to it with the early synthetics.

Is it okay to mix synthetics and conventional oils?
Some of the first synthetics offered were formulated with high levels of ester that were incompatible with conventional oils. Today's modern synthetics are designed to be compatible with these conventional mineral oils. So, if you have synthetic oil in your car and would like to top-off with conventional oil, that's okay. SynPower is fully compatible with all conventional motor oils, as well as other leading synthetic oils.
 
hmmmm...what about running synthetic if you have the by-pass valve plugged (not by me)?

I run a CONSTANT oil press. of about 40 pounds no matter what the temp....so I'm a little nervous that synthetic would actually drop that pressure lower.

Outside of getting the by-pass valve fixed (which means buying an entire casing since the builder ruined the "normal" install area), should I stick with a heavy weight non-syn oil?

Just curious......and a little peeved that the by-pass was removed!

P.S.S. I have my OP bypass blocked and it does just fine with 10w30 synthetic. My pressure is 25 hot idle and around 40 with any throttly, hwy is about 55-60psi.

...you don't remember what spring your running by any chance??
 
Its a stock spring, hits about 70-75psi on the vdo gauge when cold. Stock pump w/ a booster plate, biggie filter and fresh rod and main bearings because the timing chain send aluminum thru them because of the factory OP bypass before I could diagnose and get it changed. With the bypass now plugged, I've run it like this for about 3K miles and I just let the car warm a little before taking off from the house and try not to get into too much boost until the water temp is up to operating. Running a Mobil1 synthetic filter because of the very strong case but plan to switch back to a Purolator because the antidrainback doesn't seem to work that great on the 2 I've used so far.
