Was doing a little tuning on a fellow TR owner's car today and noticed that it never came out of Park/Neutral according to scantool (TLink). Tranny was out recently for rebuild, so checking the linkage is probably first course of action.
Question I have is, what effect(s) does this have [if any] on the operation/performance of the car when the ECM thinks its in P/N although the car is driving? I think I read that TCC lockup never occurs, true? Anything else? I noticed sometimes the idle would be high when coming to a stop, dont know if any relation there. Would there be any boost related effects, such as from the wastegate solenoid operation?
Thanks for any input.

That is controlled by a switch at the base of the column (operated by the n/s linkage) Does it have an after market shifter?

It only effects idle speed as far as I know. (different for P/N vs Drive)

Does the column turn when you shift gears? If not, its probably been disconnected. Maybe a big tach strapped to the steering column?:D I disconnected mine a couple years ago, no ill affects.

Not sure yet, that was what I had mind for first thing to check (linkage) when I get a chance to look at the guys car again later today. Fixing the situation isnt really an issue for me. What I would like to know is, from others' experiences and knowledge, what are some of the ill affects of having this situation where the ECM is dealing with readings all over the place when it thinks the car shouldnt be moving (TTT). That info may help me to diagnose a couple other issues that may or may not be related (i.e. idle speed issues, TCC lock up, affect WG solenoid operation?, etc.).
Thanks for the responses thus far.

I had a problem with the P/N light that was caused by the wires on the bottom on the valve body not being secured. You have to drop the trans pan to see them though.

The only thing it may effect is idle speed, but I asked the very same question after putting direct scan on the car, and no one had seen any ill effects from this. If you're having other problems, look elsewhere. HTH
