i think my P/N switch is busted. on a DS it shows P/N in any gear and a thrasher chip wont work if its got the anit-theft feature. also the button on the shifter, i can press it in and out with no effect on shifter position change. i shift the car without it. where can i get these 2 parts for my car, the P/N switch and the shifter button thing?

p/n switch in a junkyard.. i couldnt telll you where exactly it is, just that its on the column somewhere down there.

the shifter button though.. take off your console and check.. one of two things has happened.

1. the spring holding the shifter button assembly "up" has broken/come off

2. the shift gate has come loose or isnt there.

As for the P/N switch it may be something else, like linkage. You need to find out if your linkage is working.

While moving the shifter through the gears, watch the steering column, right where it comes out of the dash board. Is it turning as you move the shifter???? It has to be or all the P/N switches in the world wont fix your problem.

Part number for P/N switch is GM#15705308 Delco D2286A. But I agree and think you need to check you shifter linkage. You still have everything hooked up under your car? Didn't screw anything up if you pulled the trans out or anything? If not check your shifter. The most common problems there are the slide on the knob(t-handle) #560890 but better to replace the entire handle(multiple part numbers) the shift lever rod extension( the plastic tip on the rod running through the shift lever) #559978-discontinued or the shift lever rod retaining spring#559983 the holds the rod up in the lever and acts as a return for the detent on the shifter.

turbodave, why wuld the column move when my shifter is on the center console?

turbofish38, i took off the T-handle once and i saw a broken piece in there which is one or both of my problems i assume. i recently had the trans serviced but the guy knew what he was doing and it had done this ever since i hd the car.

cause its connected underneath the car. the column moves because all the p/n and reverse switches are actuated by it turning. it was probably easier to just connect the shifter to the column than to move the switches over under the console etc..
