Piston rings to be used on forged pistons.. what are you guys running 1/16, 1/16, 3/16

The Speed Pro's are low tension oil rings.. :eek: As are the JE's. As are the Hastings :mad:

On stock pistons, they are hi-tension on oil rings. And we know how nice oil is in the combustion chamber.

Anyone make a set of high tension oil rings to be fitted on the racing pistons and have a plasma or severe duty top ring :confused: Any input on a Hell-Fire ring for our apps.

Always hitting that line between racing and street.. i'm not running low tension oil rings..

Maybe I need to buy two sets of piston rings and make my own??

You may have to buy a seperate set of oil rings as I did. I also refuse to run low tension oil rings. I believe all the oil rings are 5/16.

Im running total seals on mine. I think i specified std tension when i ordered. Ive run the stock size and the 1/16, 1/16, 3/16 rings with no problems. All were std. tension total seals. Im suprised theres no listing for std tension oil rings.
 
Can you guys post the part number for what is needed... I didn't realize the speedpro rings were low tension.....
 
JE has a ring set with the high tension oil rings. This is new stuff.. I wont know until Monday tho.

You can piece it together.. buy top, middle, and oil rings separately. Next time if I ever have custom pistons made, i'll choose 5/64's like the stockers.

I'll post a part number on Monday. For 3/16, 3/16, and high tension oil.
 
I've used Total Seal Gapless top, std. tension oil rings, 1/16, 1/16, 3/16 in the past with fantastic success. Cylinder leakdown at 2% or better right after breakin and stayed at that level after tuning and 60 plus timeslip runs. I'm sold on them. With the new motor I'm trying the thinner metric size rings. Still gapless top and with low tension oil rings. Trying to reduce some of that power robbing friction.
 
I agree with DonWG.. Get Total seal Gapless TOP RING along with the standard tension oil rings. I too went through hasting rings and J/E rings and it smoked pretty bad. Using these on some 20 over J/E's. Look on Total seal's website and download their catalog to retrieve the p/n.
FWIW: I did a compression test not too long ago and I got <5% leakdown on the worst cylinder.. :)

I too became a believer in the Total seal gapless rings. Used them on my last motor. I can not vaildate the leakdown part but can tell you I have not seen any smoke.

Caution advertisement :) ---- I have a set of brand new M5899 .030 Total seal gapless top rings with standard tension oil ring for sale right now! Way less than Summit sells them for.
