Allot of contraversy is going around about this poor little girl that has to do 24 hours in jail for having the blue lights or cobra eyes or whatever the hell that they are called these days.. The poll is to get hte general concensus of what everyone thinks...

My opinion--

Enforcement - Bottom line is that having certain colored lights on a vehicle is illegal.. especially when they conflict with emergency equipment.. Enforcement is justified.. stop and ticket..

Punishment - I feel that the punishment may have been a bit tooo harsh in this case as they were dealing with an "accessory" for her vehicle.. She did not use them in a manner such as to inpersonate a police officer..she just wanted to mix up the rice a bit more..

Attitude is everything.. If she gave the judge attitude, then the judge would show the same courtesy. No one was there so there maybe more to it.

"I got a $800 fine, six months probation, 40 hours community service and 24 hours jail time," Cook said.

WHOA... that's harsh. I kinda get the feelin' there's more to this... I wonder how much the fine was initially by the ticketing officer. Yes, the court can raise that fine, but I'm wondering if it was a steep fine to begin with. If it was... say $200-$500 then I'm not sure if I would have gone in that courtroom without a lawyer or at least consultation.

My opinion... Yes, she should get a penalty if they are illegal. I'm fairly certain they are. If she had had this fine numerous times then I could see a harsher penalty. But this does seem a bit much.

I don't think she realized the seriousness of using the lights which the authorities use and therefore should get a slap on the wrist.

Probably won't go to jail.

Someone should let these ricers know what the laws are, however there is no pics of the car so i can't make a judgement call. I find it hard to believe it looked anything like cop lights.

Well my thoughts are is that the law was written for these "blue light bandits" but they have since been revamped to specify the lighting standards by DOT..

Example would be:

Front of Car - Clear lights and Amber
Rear - Red lights (brake) and amber (turns) and clear for reverse..

Everything else is questionable.. There was a thread about those APC tails that look like the "euro" ... and were thought to be out of Fed DOT spec..

The laws are clearly defined on the majority of the each states Legislation web site... But I do not beleive that ignorance is a defense...

ignorance isnt a defence and no judge would accept it. do you really have to be told that putting blue lights of any kind on your vehicle (if you are not a cop and it is not an official police car) is a no no? do you really have to be told this???? what happened to common sense?

there are blue lights on some cop cars you cant see until they are turned on. one example of this is a small one in the back up light assemblies of crown vics. they are tiny little blue bulbs that flash like a strobe. oddly enough they are the same size as the "cobra eyes" so i can see why they'd crack down on crap like this. i'm pretty convinced a lot of people using the blue turn signals and cobra lights and other blue lights are using them to challenge authority. of course they'll lose that battle everytime but its also a cry for attention. "look at me, i have blue lights, pull me over and give me a ticket and then i'll run back to my friends and tell them how bad cops are because you "harassed" me because of my lights. U JUZ HATIN ON ME!!!!" WTF ever.....

the ricers can use any color they want but they choose blue. blue is the color police departments use. coincidence? i think not!

lets also keep in mind all those idiots out there who get blue lights and try to use them to pull people over pretending to be a cop so they can rob them, rape them, etc. they got the punishment they deserved. her punishment also serves as a warning to other ricers as to how serious this situation is. because of people impersonating cops this is not something to take lightly or think of as no big deal.

play with matches and you get burned. if you need to be told you cant have blue lights on your car and you need to be told why maybe you shouldnt even be driving to begin with. more than likely you probably need a "guardian" with you at all times if you're that clueless about blue lights on your car. this whole "i didnt know any better" excuse just doesnt fly with me.

"The car has to be equipped with a device capable of producing flashing or revolving lights and as you know, from looking at the car, those are just small blue lights that neither flash or revolve," he said.

but can be easily wired to flash. so much for their basic knowledge of automotive electricity. still no excuse.

hate to say it but i honestly dont see why there should be any tolerence for this blue light situation that seems to be a growing problem. blue lights are for cops only and there are those who use blue lights pretending to be cops. can anyone see why they'd be a little harsh about this issue?

of course i wonder why they dont crack down on the company that makes these lights and the other ricey companies who make similar blue lights. they should be going after them.

Sorry, but cops don't you nose fins that stay lit continuously. Have you ever seen these in person? They are very popuklar in NYC and I see them at least once a day. But calling her a ricer in your topic, you tried to sway public approival to your side, but it is not working at all. More than two thirds of pollers disagree with you.

Come on guys, vote for my view in this topic to make the liberals cringe! :)

Bottom line is cops should be using their time more wisely instead of busting people for headlight covers, tint and headlights.

no, cops should get rid of this ****.

IT PLAINLY STATES IN THE DRIVERS LISCENSE HAND BOOK THAT YOU CAN ONLY HAVE:

blue lights NEVER
red brake lights on the BACK
headlights in the FRONT
orange turn signals all around
white backup lights on the BACK

if these dumb ****s cant remember that far back they deserve to atleast get a ticket.

you deserve a ticket if you have headlight covers on at night, they are dangerous, ask drew carlton, his nice 84 gn got totaled cause some dumb bitch had headlight covers on at night and her headlights were barely visible, bam, car is totaled.

dumbasses have red blinkers in the front here and wonder why they get pulled over.. a certain people put green lights in every availiable spot.. ugh

there actually is a reason for the tint laws.. if you have limo all around an officer cant see how many people is in the car if you get pulled over at night.

these are all safety issues, if police say DO NOT PUT BLUE LIGHTS ON YOUR CAR plain as day, and the package they come in says OFF ROAD USE ONLY, really is it that hard to tell youre going to get a ticket if you put them on?

I agree that they should be illegal and that she shouldn't have had them, but.....Jail Time???? Even an overnighter is rediculous. I think most of us did something to our cars when we were teens that was deemed illegal. Yes, we knew that if we got caught we would get a ticket, but not a huge fine and a nigh in jail. She should have received a fix-it ticket and nothing more.

Besides, how many of us would like to spend a night in jail for running a test pipe instead of a cat? I know I may be comparing apples to oranges here, but I think any equipment violation should mean a repair ticket and nothing more. Jails are overcrowded as it is with real criminals.

Well Ter,

That may be the "status quo" up there in NY.. But even NY has laws against it.. I seriously doubt that everyone that has these are V- Firefighters.. But I will take your side on the harshness it is just a "cosmetic thing" not a rotating/strobe or other inpersonating tool.. But the law says that BLUE LIGHTS ARE A NO NO..

But as a disclaimer, neither you nor I were there and understand the complete circumstances.. I seriously doubt there is yet another "Government Conspiracy" that you feel is going on.

CH 71 Article 9 Para 41

4. Blue light. One blue light may be affixed to any motor vehicle
owned by a volunteer member of a fire department or on a motor vehicle owned by a member of such person`s family residing in the same household or by a business enterprise in which such person has a proprietary interest or by which he or she is employed, provided such volunteer firefighter has been authorized in writing to so affix a blue light by the chief of the fire department or company of which he or she is a member, which authorization shall be subject to revocation at any time by the chief who issued the same or his or her successor in office. Such blue light may be displayed exclusively by such volunteer firefighter on such a vehicle only when engaged in an emergency operation. The use of blue and red light combinations shall be prohibited on all fire vehi-
cles. The use of blue lights on fire vehicles shall be prohibited and the use of blue lights on vehicles shall be restricted for use only by a volunteer firefighter as provided for in this paragraph.

blah blah blah. I'd be pissed if my car got totaled cause someone broke a DOT law BUT, there are FAR worse things out there that i wish the police would do stuff about. Breaking a law and committing a crime are two different things IMO. Criminals are running rampid in the US and the police are cracking down on "street racers""graffiti artists" and "agressive skateboards"...... Gimme a _____ break!

most likely cause its easier to nab a skateboarder, a graffiti artist, and a street racer, than to raid a meth lab.

I think it is a little harsh. A ticket and a fine would have been good enough. But, on the other hand I can see how the use of blue lights can be dangerous, especially when a dumb@ss can't tell the difference between police lights and a decorative (dumb) light. I see these sometimes here in Phx. They put them on the hood where the window sprayer is, the one to clean your windshield.

Still, she broke the law and now has to face her punishment. 24 hours aint that bad, builds character:D

88Cutty - Don't follow you here? Car Got Totaled because someone broke the DOT law? What are you talking about? Breaking a law and committing a crime 2 different things? What are you talking about? Look there is a valid reason why police chase street racers..People die daily, innoccent people at the accidental hand of street racers.. Graffiti? Never did that one.. Skateboarders.. They have enough issues.. Would not really mess with them..

Either way.. Opinion duly noted...

the country isn't a better place cause police crack down on DOT standards, that's my point. Robbery, grand theft auto, murder, rape, child abuse and blue head lights. Which one doesn't fit? Police turn a blind eye to the Escalade with Black windows and 24 inch rims cause they don't wanna go down that path. You have to born yesterday to not see that these people driving around in those aren't legit. You can thank the Democrates for neutering the police. Police should profile!! and if the people who are getting profiled don't like it then should stand up against whats bringing them down, here's a hint.....its not Johny Law.

Punishing someone for blue headlights isn't fixing anything. If they wanna fix things in this country they need to stop welfare for abled bodied people and send police into schools. I'm sick of paying taxes to help people so they can sell drugs and have nicers things than me. Notice i'm way off topic now. That's because the topic isn't a big deal. but if street racing is such a big problem now, why don't more tracks open up? why do cities build skate parks for the skaters but not race tracks for the racers? Whyare the baseball fields in the ghetto nicer than the one in my my neighborhood. Because of democrats.

88 I hear you bro.. And feel your pain.. Things are screwed up.. In allot of different ways. I can't really say its democrats or republicans as I don't really pass judgement on partisonship..Its people regardless what party you are part of. If you think you are frustrated with the view and perception you have ..Man, you just don't know.. I have stopped the cadi's, the drugs, the speeders, the man that was found guilty of 2nd degree murder in Jan 1990 and sentenced to 10 years and I had the opportunity to lock him up again in july of 1991..
Believe me.. IT IS FRUSTRATING!

I know in the larger metro areas such as Philly, NYC etc the blinders are put on...I really don't understand why as I never worked in that environment..

In defense of the profession though...(sorry I have too)

Cops are people too.. They cannot lock up everyone, they cannot save everyone, all they can do (At least professional ones) is best effort..

cops in a lot of ways are in a catch 22. they really have their hands tied in larger metro areas.
