Is it worth it to install ported iron heads on a car with a stock cam? Do the stock heads inhibit flow? Just curious about the future mods of my car. Thanks!

Yes it looks like they could be a bottle neck with your combo.
An engine is an air pump air in air out,but i am no authority.
I am sure others will chime in with more experience on the subject.

heads are a must have mod in my opinion. just like the man says, air in - air out. you can make more power at the same boost level with ported heads. As far as the cam is concerned, I'm putting a 204/214 cam in my car because I'm rebuilding the whole damn engine anyway, but people hit the 10's with the stock cam. I like the fact that I am gonna be able to make more power on pump gas with my ported heads. Then again, there are PLENTY of really fast cars running stock heads. I would get the heads if I were you. If you want to run say, an 11.50's, without ported heads you may have to run say, 26lbs. of boost. With the ported heads, you may only have to run 20 or 19lbs. of boost to get there. (just example):D

Does anyone know how much less boost has to be run with ported heads as opposed to stock heads to make the same power? Is there a rule of thumb?

You bet it's worth it. The more the head flows, the more power you can make, even with a stock cam.

copgn, a buddy of mine recently ran 11.93 in his TTA. it has ported stock heads, 210-205 cam, 3 inch DP, alky, custom chip, and stock turbo @ 16 psi plus small stuff like fuel pump and regualtor and KN. that was with a 5 lb launch, low timing, and BFG Drag radials i believe and his car has a 12 bolt 3.73 rear which meant he had to shift into OD before the finish line. the alky was used b/c he said the stock turbo was well out of its flow range and was heating the air so bad he had to use the alky. a more efficient turbo may be able to keep up with the airflow and alky may not be needed. he is on the board. his name is BM Computer Src.
