Then when they come and arrest your daugher, you will have no one else to blame but yourselves.

No kidding, it's called PARENTING.
The punishment does seem harsh, but even I know you aren't supposed to have blue or red lights on the car. Fine if you want to put them on there and take your chances. Just like speeding, if you get caught be prepared to pay to play. She could've gotten some yellow or white ones, or none at all. I am surprised the manufacturer can sell them. Hardly for use offroad.

Neons and tint are already banned in this state and many others. Don't see the ACLU filing 1 lawsuit for violating anyone's rights. It was her responsibility to know what's legal to install on a vehicle she drives. It's not a "free for all" out there. I can see it now....eliminate all vehicle and traffic laws and we'd be living in the movie "Mad Max".
I'd like to see a yes or no poll to see if people here think vehicle/traffic laws are necessary.

Jail is a bit harsh but I think there's more to this story than what's being reported.Originally posted by TurboTer
The ACLU is a bunch of commies out for their own interests. They don't give a rat's ass about American rights. Even if she did know, who cares? Does she deserve jail? Did this poor girl sell coke on the streets? Did she kill anyone? Did she rob a gas station? NO! She put neon lights on her car! Whoever doesn't think this is scary will be the first one to come crying when the Nazis arive at their door.
Vehicle laws may be necessary, but this punishment is government abuse. I'd like to see a poll tro see if she deserves to go to jail.
I couldn't have said it better myself. I thought I was the only one to write those. I hear "XXX state allows it, why doesn't Michigan...that's not fair". I don't think many states allow multi-color nonsense like people make it out to be.Originally posted by gnturboray

The officer could have used some discression and told her those lights are illegal and unplug them. He could have given her a citation to get re-inspected to make sure the lights were removed.

Your examples don't excuse bad behavior. Everything you mentioned is wrong or illegal. Usually the punishment fits the crime but injustices exist...just look at OJ's verdict.
Neons=Nazis? Quite the leap.

I do speed, and I do face the consequences: a ticket. Paid 2 in the last 12 mos.
I do agree, jail was too harsh, probably probation was too. I think that the blue light deal is not without precedence, but in the case of these wiper deals, it is out of line to be so harsh. There was a rash of rapes and abductions a couple of years ago where the guy was pulling women over with a blue light, as if he were an undercover cop. That did 2 things, got women in a bad situation but also scared the public from pulling over for a legitimate cop. Therefore, I do agree with the blue light/red light being illegal. I think that this was a situation where she screwed up but she should have gotten a ticket and been made to remove them, due to the nature of the lights. Part of the problem, in general, is proper, equal enforcement. I doubt she's the first in her area to have these things.

Exactly, it's called a "fix-it" ticket. Facing jail time because of light bulbs? Uhh, who's the victim?
About a month ago I got pulled over for tinted windows. While I was obviously a major threat to society because of my callous & criminally neglectful disregard for the lives and safety of others because of the heinous criminal behavior I abashedly displayed by willfully (and wantonly) operating a motor vehicle with gray windows, the officer instead decided to save the jail space for someone more deserving (like some dastardly high-school graduate with blue lights)...
and people wonder why I hate politicians...
