You see what I mean. This is like gun laws. Some will say "We don't need assualt weapons". Then more guns laws will follow until they are banned. Now, some will say "So what if they ban tinted windows and neon lights?" Then when they come and arrest your daugher, you will have no one else to blame but yourselves. This I why I will NEVER consent to driving laws. I will never give one inch of my freedom to this abusive government gone out of control.

So, how've you been? :)

No kidding, it's called PARENTING.
The punishment does seem harsh, but even I know you aren't supposed to have blue or red lights on the car. Fine if you want to put them on there and take your chances. Just like speeding, if you get caught be prepared to pay to play. She could've gotten some yellow or white ones, or none at all. I am surprised the manufacturer can sell them. Hardly for use offroad.

Neons and tint are already banned in this state and many others. Don't see the ACLU filing 1 lawsuit for violating anyone's rights. It was her responsibility to know what's legal to install on a vehicle she drives. It's not a "free for all" out there. I can see it now....eliminate all vehicle and traffic laws and we'd be living in the movie "Mad Max".

I'd like to see a yes or no poll to see if people here think vehicle/traffic laws are necessary.

I write'em all the time,,neons, cobra eye's, wrong color driving lights, and wrong color turn signals. Texas law specifically states lighting color on vehicle's.
License and insurance please. Press hard four copies;)

Come on, we all break the law, like it or not. Think not? Ever do 45 mph in a 40? Then you broke the law. Would you like to have been arrested and charged with an $800 fine? People should be staging mass protests. When the government starts arresting for things like this, it's alarming indeed.

The ACLU is a bunch of commies out for their own interests. They don't give a rat's ass about American rights. Even if she did know, who cares? Does she deserve jail? Did this poor girl sell coke on the streets? Did she kill anyone? Did she rob a gas station? NO! She put neon lights on her car! Whoever doesn't think this is scary will be the first one to come crying when the Nazis arive at their door.

Vehicle laws may be necessary, but this punishment is government abuse. I'd like to see a poll tro see if she deserves to go to jail.

In NY those blue lights are illegal too. I personally hate them, as it's a little ricey, but at least NY law would not put anyone in jail over this. It's a $55 fine and 0 points.

Jail is a bit harsh but I think there's more to this story than what's being reported.

Your examples don't excuse bad behavior. Everything you mentioned is wrong or illegal. Usually the punishment fits the crime but injustices exist...just look at OJ's verdict.

Neons=Nazis? Quite the leap.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I thought I was the only one to write those. I hear "XXX state allows it, why doesn't Michigan...that's not fair". I don't think many states allow multi-color nonsense like people make it out to be.

Ran up on a Honda Prelude today, thing was tinted nose to tail including limo on the windshield. Was ready to light'em up then saw the Tennessee plate....DAMN! Shoulda written him anyway under the vision obstruction statute, no state exemption there. Now I know Tennessee doesn't allow that nonsense either:

Tennessee
Windshield - NO
Front Side - 35% Film
Rear Side - 35% Film
Rear - 35% Film
Year Passed - 198x

Note : MPV's and SUV's can have darker tint behind the front side doors such as extended cab trucks.

The officer could have used some discression and told her those lights are illegal and unplug them. He could have given her a citation to get re-inspected to make sure the lights were removed.

LMAO!!!!!! thats great, now if they could get them on exhause pipes that sound like farts, and japanese letters on the side of their cars that no one understands... Bust seriously is there somethign wrong with having tinted windows??? mine are tinted, not dark like some, just enough to keep the sun out, and it looks kinda cool. it does make me rethink my siren...(long story, the previous oner had a car alarm installed and they did it wrong, he never took the time to straighten it out, so now there is a switch that will make the siren go off, i pulled a friend over who didn't know the car was mine :D , good times)

I do speed, and I do face the consequences: a ticket. Paid 2 in the last 12 mos.
I do agree, jail was too harsh, probably probation was too. I think that the blue light deal is not without precedence, but in the case of these wiper deals, it is out of line to be so harsh. There was a rash of rapes and abductions a couple of years ago where the guy was pulling women over with a blue light, as if he were an undercover cop. That did 2 things, got women in a bad situation but also scared the public from pulling over for a legitimate cop. Therefore, I do agree with the blue light/red light being illegal. I think that this was a situation where she screwed up but she should have gotten a ticket and been made to remove them, due to the nature of the lights. Part of the problem, in general, is proper, equal enforcement. I doubt she's the first in her area to have these things.

I didn't even realize the person in the picture was a female until I read the article!! :o :o Then again maybe I've just seen too many shemales out here in L.A. Besides, you know we are all fruits, nuts, and homos out here so my judgement may be skewed. :D :D Well maybe not......but I'd hate to see us lose our reputation anyway. :)

As far as the lights go, jail time is pretty extreme. Not called for in this situation at all unless as previously mentioned there is something going on we aren't being told.

Exactly, it's called a "fix-it" ticket. Facing jail time because of light bulbs? Uhh, who's the victim?

About a month ago I got pulled over for tinted windows. While I was obviously a major threat to society because of my callous & criminally neglectful disregard for the lives and safety of others because of the heinous criminal behavior I abashedly displayed by willfully (and wantonly) operating a motor vehicle with gray windows, the officer instead decided to save the jail space for someone more deserving (like some dastardly high-school graduate with blue lights)...

and people wonder why I hate politicians...

If there is more to the story, let's hear it. If the girl did annything to warrant jail time (such as hit the cop, have a previous warrant out, etc.), then by all means throw her in jail. But if this is all to the story, then it frightens me.

The examples I mentioned (selling coke, killing someone, or robbing a gas station) were stuff that deserves jail time. Stuff this poor girl did not do.

Neons don't equal Nazis. I was implying that all of this is leading to Nazis taking away our freedoms. Soon they will be at all of our doors if we dare defy them.

What would you have done if instead of getting the ticket you would have gotten jail time? Ouch, that would be uncalled for, as this was. This whole "tough on crime" thing is a joke. I can understand why they might be illegal, but this is nuts. If it's the blue lights I'm thinking about, there are two (about the size of a quarter) that go on the hood near the wipers and stay lit. Looks NOTHING like a cop's sirens. Looks like two nostrals. I know kids who have them, and like I said, it's stupid and ricey but doesn't warrant anything more than a slap on the wrist.

Well said. People have got to stop voving for liberal Democrats and neo-conservative, law-enforcement Republicans. We need to vote for right-wing anti-government politicians like former Congressmen Helen Chenoweth of Idaho, and Bob Barr in GA. Only then can we save the country.

What people fail to realize here is that the judge sentenced her to jail, not the cop. The cop could have used some discretion and let her off with a warning or a "fix-it" ticket, but he's not obligated to. Her attitude surely had a lot to do with whether or not she got that ticket. Further, I'm sure that that offense does not carry jail time or community service by default nor would it require a court appearance. She probably could have simply plead guilty and paid the fine through the mail. But no. I'm thinking she went to court and mouthed off to the judge. Once you go to court, that fee schedule on the back of the ticket becomes irrelevant. You're at the mercy of the judge - s/he can be nice if you're nice, or put you in a world of hurt if you're not.

That being said, I have a *mandatory* court appearance at the end of the month for speeding (more than 25 MPH over the limit is a mandatory court appearance). The purpose is so the judge can tell you what an idiot you are for driving that fast and to make you promise not to do it again. You think I'm going to argue?

Jim
