My gate seems to have lost controlling boost. I have the valve inside the car turned as low as possible and the boost creeped to 24lbs before I let off the gas. Any ideas of what to look for? Or does the gate need refurbishing?

First try the stonger spring for the gate, but there is a good chance you'll need it rebuilt. The stuff in there gets worn and the initial quality of material wasn't that great from what I recall. One of the major turbo vendors also rebuilds the gates (John Craig or Precision Turbo or someone).

You can get the stronger spring from ATR.

Also - if you search the archives, you'll find this answer from me again with better info. It's Monday morning and I'm still asleep!

Check for leaks in your boost line from inside the car to the gate. Also, take the top off the gate itself and check that the valve moves freely and for tears and/or leaks in the diaphram. I would doubt the spring is worn out unless you've really been pushing the hell out of it - but then again - who doesn't these days;)

Sounds like the valve is rusted out and stuck. Mines did that a few times already, send it to John craig and he will do a good job fixing it.

It's not usually a case of the spring wearing out. ATR put lower pressure springs in most units and people running more boost often need the higher pressure spring to maintain steady boost.

BTW - do you have the bleed-off from the valve plumbed back into the top of the wastegate?

yes, i have the bleeder on the top of the gate. My honest opinion is the gate is shot. It has been on the car for 7 years and has always worked pretty well until now. am probably going to just send it to John Craig and have him go through it.. He said he could do it for $25 plus parts. Thanks for all the replies guys.

Man, for the $25 I'd get it done anyway. Like I said, the guides need to be done over the original ATR design anyway. I didn't realize the price was that good from John.

I figured the same thing. it is old and is due for an overhaul.

I finally got around to pulling the gate off. I could not push down the valve at all. I ASSume it is stuck. Or does it take more than hand strength to push it down? Either way, it is off to John Craig for an overhaul.

The valve should move freely by hand. Sounds like it has seized up. Good move getting it rebuit!
