just wondering how many miles a tank of alky last you, what kind of alcohol do you use and where do you purchase it ? thanks guys

I put about 2,000 miles on my car last spring/summer/fall, and used about 1.5 gallons. I bought 5 gallons in the spring.

If you don't go above 12 PSI (that's where the conroller is roughly set to kick on at) much or often, the Alcohol will last a long time. Tough to do, I know. I don't beat on my car, just drive it to shows, cruise-ins, joyrides, and 1-2 track trips/yr. I would say everytime I drive it, I might get into high enough boost to activate the Alky 1-3 times.

With an AlkyControl kit (Razor) pure Methanol is what is needed. I get mine at a local fuel supplier who carries exotic fuels. About $5/gal.

Most guys from what I've read buy 5 gallons every spring. In the Alky thread forum there is a sticky on Methanol sources.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking about getting a kit but I want to be sure about all the cost involved

In the 5 or 6 years I've had alky injection I think I have purchased maybe 15 gallons of Meth...as stated above, it only sprays when your in the boost...and in that 5 or 6 years, I know I've made roughly 100 passes and logged maybe 5k miles on the street....probably more evaporated than I used :) But it's nice to be tuned for "full on" ALL the time :D

I drive my car about 6-10k a year and boost it very often. Every time I take it out I will get into the alky at least 10 times (these motors LOVE it). I go through at MAX a gallon a month. I do mix it roughly 50/50 with water.

does methanol go bad like gasoline?

It doesn't go bad if it's in a sealed container. HOWEVER..... methanol is what's called hygroscopic, meaning it takes on water from the air. No matter how good of a sealed container you have, it will take on moisture.

Not enough to affect anything really, but I always make sure I shake up my jug before I add any to the car.

I guess if you'd leave a container sit for years & not use it, it may take on enough water to "lean it out" so to speak.

You can use a mixture of isopropyl alky and water so I figure a little bit of water isn't going to hurt since its not the primary fuel.
Remember the water injection systems on the old Z28s...water to displace the air to virtually make a higher compression ratio and help cool things down. I've never had a problem with it getting old or taking on any water vapor.

I have the kit that use's a radiator overflow for meth tank,With it full i can get about 2-3 full tanks gasoline out of it,The kit comes with 2 led light's, one Green for when activation other Red for when my meth tank is running low. 5 gallons of Meth If i re-call is $13.00..It will last you months!!!..How long it last in your car is all Foot related..But when if you get a kit, You won't look back...ok well maybee, but only in your rear view mirror at cars you Smoke!

Enjoy!

(ps. I mounted my alky tunning box in lower left part the dash, looks factory,Led lights drilled into boost guage piller )

what kind of alcohol do you use? VP M1
and where do you purchase it? Speed shop or the track believe it or not its WAY cheaper at the track.

You need to worry about the ALKY side effects.
In my case
1-my right foot got MUCH heavier:biggrin:
2-i keep loosing traction.
3-i have to go to the gas station more often.
4-if you forget to prime it after a few days of NON use you will be rebuilding your engine just like me.

That scares me too that I'll forget (sorry about your engine!)
- I find myself tapping the "test " button all the time! It only takes a second for the wideband to go rich & you know your rerady to go!

I'm always amazed at how much meth is left in the tank after some heavy footed driving - 5 gallons DOES seem to last forever.

20-25 gallons of meth per season. (April-November) I use M-1 and get it from the local speed shop the guys buy their race fuel from. Razor's Kit is what I use.

I think explained this way helps. At WOT you'll use between 3/4-1.5 ounces per second. Depending on boost/nozzles/etc. Tank holds 128 ounces.

I have used a gallon driving less than 4 miles.. I have also used a gallon driving from Tampa to Kentucky and back =1600 miles. Time on the pedal dictates usage.

When methanol picks up water it starts changing colors. To a brownish tint.. once the meth is brown.. toss it.. its some nasty stuff. I also find keeping the cans of the ground preserves it way longer. A simple 2x4 piece of wood works great.

Always use the test button. Its there for a reason. A buddy long time ago flies older airplanes said.. when I get into the cockpit.. I always test the magneto to make sure its working. Reason is alcohol will evaporate.. if the lines are dry.. it will take extra amount of time to prime them up.. this is time you dont have when the boost needle is pegged. I cant come up with any simple way to auto purge the system that doesnt create more problems than it solves. Or gets prohibitive in cost to justify. Probably be an additional 200 to cover a transducer, solenoid, hoses, wiring, etc or simply push the button and save the $$$.

Hope this helps.

Yes.

Alcohol chips are typically set for 23/21 timing & 22-24 lbs of boost. As usual, these are baseline settings & you can adust them as needed just like all TT chips.

Will I need a new chip to support the addition of a alky system ?

No you can use a regular street chip.

If you want more timing.. then get an alky chip to improve your situation.

Fuel provided by an 16 lb street chip and a 25 lb alky chip is the same. The 9 psi difference comes from the methanol being injected. Street chips typically have 18 degree's timing.. alky chips are typically 21-23 degree's.

I think I need to buy a new chip anyways to support the translator 2 (if I read correctly )

I think you will be fine with the street chip. It seems that you are a little new so the lower base timing default in the street chip is a litter safer. You can add more than enough timing with the chip you have. You can also adjust fueling to where you need it. The translator tricks the computer into thinking its a stocker so the chip reads just fine.

Ok thanks, I was just wondering because the tt site recommends the extender extreme G chip for the Gen 2 translator. I am new to this all so I just try to buy what's recommended and the best parts I can afford. I try to do as much homework as possible before I make any purchases. Thanks guys for the help.

Translator gen 2! Oh, well you would be better off with the Chip they suggested. Its a real nice unit and you can add in the WB. I thought you had the Translator Plus. Sorry to confuse you.
