well i am heading out to the track in the early afternoon for some night racing. i am going to bandimere if any of you colorado guys want to meet up with me.
i have called a few muffler shops and most will not cut my stock cat from my stock downpipe and install flanges for me. they all say that they cannot modfiy what came on the car. i want to do this so i can unbolt the cat and gut it. one shop said he could do it for a reasonable price but he is booked for the next few days. i wanted to have this done by tomorrow but it looks like i am screwed.

would i be able to unbolt my downpipe with the cat still connected to it and gut it that way? i know its going to be a little awkward to position it all to get all the stuff out of the cat. is there anything horribly wrong with gutting my cat this way?

FWIW & IMHO:
I know that it is different in the land of Kalifornication than in that of Colorado, but I would think twice before gutting the cat. Missing the numbers for 1 or 2 runs is not going to kill you, and you would still have the cat if needed. I gutted a cat in about '88 or so on a daily driver Maxima, and that stuff did not come out that easy. I was at a muff shop a few years later getting a piece of talpipe welded on that had broken off, and the owner comes over to me and says "Say dude, do you know that thing looks like it does not have a functioning cat, and we don't want to be stickler around here, but we'll give you about 5 mins to get that thing outta here, before we drop a dime. Naturally, I got the fck outta Dodge with out having to be asked again. Also, taking the car to muffler shops is much more productive than calling them. Most are far more leniant in person than on the phone. My guess is, and it's just a guess, that if you go to a few muff shops, tell them what you want, and ask how much you will have much better results. Not much help for today, but might work for tomorrow. Good luck.

thanks for the reply. i have a spare cat lying around that is why i want to gut the one that is currently on the car. i want to have a gutted cat for the streets instead of a test pipe with a dump (for the track) mainly beacuse if a cop or someone just wanted to be d!ck and pulled me over he may look under neath and give me a ticket for not having a cat. not sure if that has happened to anyone but i am sure it isnt a cheap ticket.

I cut my cat off with a hack saw, then took it to a muffler shop and had the flange welded on, then took the DP off and took it to them and had another flange welded on it. They seem to do whatever you want if the parts are not on the car.
I later got a THDP with a cat and straight pipe and like it much better. I just sold the 2.5" DP I had and the muffler with the flange, selling the stock DP with a flange on it now.

I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for not having a cat, thats basically what the emissions inspection is for so I wouldn't think a cop would look much less get down on the ground to look, just my thought...

Most shops will not remove a functioning CAT. Good luck at Bandimere. I was thinking of going tonight but it is supposed to rain. I am shooting for next Wednesday night (19th) though. Let me know how you did.

it will be arriving later this afternoon. my dad is very excited and a little bit sad. :D

I know you've solved the problem by now. Just thought I would mention this. I gutted the cat ON THE CAR. Dropped the connection to the exhaust, and pounded into the open end with a piece of bar stock. Once the honeycomb was all broken up, I started the car, and ran it until I blew the pieces out onto the driveway. But I couldn't tell any difference afterward, car ran the same. Now it has a high-glow cat, required to pass emissions tests in NC. I only ran it through the Hooker exhaust, my guess is that the cat is not much more restriction than the Hooker system. If you get a dump pipe installed ahead of the cat, that will let you run at the track and bypass the cat, plus give you a way to pass emissions tests.

To invest in a dump pipe would be better then gutting the cat. Or at least get a solid pipe instead of the cat.

A gutted cat allows better airflow because of the material is gone inside, but you can get even better with just a regular pipe. Dumping is even better.

77tech9 makes a point. I have a "test pipe" that will fit a stock downpipe that you can have if you pick it up - or I can take it to the track one night.

Personally I'd go for a dump pipe with one of Mark's electric cutouts. My car has one and it's great, though a little too much fun to play with all the time. My car doesn't have a cat though as the previous owner took it off and I'm not going to bother to reinstall it until it's emissions time again.
