Trying to change-out rear main seal on 87 GN. Lower main came out okay. Upper portion of rear seal is a bitch. Tried stiff wire, hand punch, even new rubber seal, just ended-up wasting a new rear seal. Tried turning engine over by hand while pushing on old seal. Any ideas?

Be carefull not to nick the crank and run a screw in it and pull it out. Worked for me a few years ago.

Did you wreck the end of it already? You might need to invest in a small needle nose pliers to grab it and pull it out. If it is a neoprene one you might have to skip to suggestion 3 as some one might have glued it in.

Next I'd try and lube up the new neoprene one(You are installing a neoprene one aren't you?), and "roll" it in, hopefully pushing out the old rope one. Be careful not to 'buger' up the crank main.

Next trick might be to drop the crank and all that that implies. Though this would be way down on the list of things to try.

Good Luck.

I used a rope seal puller on a friends last year. Its like a cork screw thats flexible. He had spent 2 days trying to get it out  and i did it in 5 min. A good auto parts store like NAPA will have this item. Just thread it in as far as possible and pull it out. This is assuming it has a rope seal in it.
