Contact the manufacturer - Edelbrock
They should be able to recommend the correct spring.

87GN_70GS That is the wrong # for the turbo V-6 it should be VS-744 and they are $2.99 each on the sight. I sell those springs for $35 plus shipping too. I thought the $1.49 each sounded to cheap!! Frank

Might want to check out my posts from Sept of 2004:

The standard replacement spring is Federal-Mogul or Sealed-Power VS677 or VS744. The VS 677 is $1.69 ea from summit, 3.13 ea from advance, or 2.49 from napa. A set of 12 from summit is $20.

The "Z28" or "LT-1" or 100 lb spring is VS739R. It is $2.25 from summit, 3.09 from advance, or 2.69 from napa. A set of 12 from summit is $27.

Or this one from June of 2003:

Our springs are the same as the small block chevy, same O.D., installed heigth, etc. There are basically two wire diameters, 0.177" (80 lbs) and 0.192" (100 lbs). They are made by folks like TRW, Federal-Mogul (used to be Sealed-Power), Melling, Pioneer, etc. Since they are Chevy, they are plentiful and cheap - everyone sells them, you can get them at AutoZone, Summit, etc. There's nothing special about any reseller's spring. I bought some Pioneers from a local engine shop for $1.50 ea.

Or my post from gnttype.org from July 1998:

The stock springs are 1.22" O.D. These are the same as small block
chevy ones. Seat pressure is 80 lbs (new) @1.700" but yours will be
around 50-60 pounds (as almost all are with a few miles on them).
Federal-Mogul (available through Advance and most all mail order
houses) lists a stock replacement p/n VS677. It is 80# closed/ 200#
open with a 267#/in rate.
Fed-Mog also lists a slightly larger replacement (the chevy LT1)
spring as VS739R. It is 1.264" OD and 100# closed/ 277# open with
350#/in rate. It it a drop-in replacement (leave out the splash
shields).
The F-M VS1615 is 1.23" OD with 85#/230# with 295 #/in rate.
The Comp Cams 979 is 80# seat pressure, 980 is 85 #.
Melling and Wolverine have equivalents to both the FM 677 and 739R.

Summary:

Part # OD(in.) Closed# Open# Rate(#/in.) Approx price
-------------------------------------------------------------
FM VS677 1.20 80 200 267 $1.5
FM VS739R 1.264 105 277 350 $2.5
FM VS1615 1.23 85 230 295 $5.0
CC 979 1.24 80 200 267 $4.0
CC 980 1.23 85 230 325 $5.0

thanks

I think ill go with the LT1 springs--Jack Merkel recommends these
But i also heard that these springs may take out the cam because of too much seat pressure---any views on this?

I would n't run any over 90-95 seat psi or you might have problems. Even under a NA 3.8 it doesn't say vs-677 it says vs-744 on that site?? Where did you guys see the vs-677 recommended for the Buick at? There is a reason they sell 2 different part #'s even though they work it doesn't meen they are the same. Not saying they are wrong but i would look into before just using them. Frank

The "739R" or "LT-1" or "100 lb" or ".192 wire diameter" springs will be too much for your application. IMO, you don't need them. The stock type will suffice.

My Fed-Mog/Speed-Pro/Sealed-Power books lists specs for:

VS-677; 1.238" OD, 2.03" free length, .177" wire diameter, 6.8 coils, 80# @ 1.7", 200# @ 1.25", coil bind 1.15", 267#/in spring rate.

VS-744; 1.225" OD, 2.02" free length, .175" wire diameter, 6.6 coils, 80# @ 1.7", 200# @ 1.25", coil bind 1.15", 267#/in spring rate.

Specs are pretty dang close. The 744 does NOT include a damper. The 677 does.
