Reman or new A/C compressor?

Anyone have any luck with reman compressors? Or should I just go new. . .

IF you have the bucks, get a new one. We(in the school shop) have not had very good luck with the reman. Just my .02 and call-backs.
If your old compressor locked-up or just craped-out make sure you flush your system and change dryer/accum.and or.-tube. If not Some companys will not warranty. Again just my.02 and bad luck.
 
My vote is for new. I have had better luck with used junkyard OEM compressors than with rebuilts.
 
I went cheap and bought one from Advance. It had a one year warranty which I thought was pretty good. Living in Illinois I figured I would get a few summers out of it. No such luck. Failed in the second year. :mad:
 
11 years on my reman.

Clutch rattles a slight bit every now and then under use, then again so did the stocker for a few years before it seized up.

I only use it about 30 times a year however, I use the astroroof a lot more.
 
Does anyone know if the "new" compressor is different in some mechanical way to the reman? Is it designed for the higher pressures R134 requires?

Check out Apco new compressors. They are identical to a new Delco unit, but cost around $270.00...as opposed to $400...Check it out

Hi,
Rebuilders are not all that much the same. Some agonize over getting it right, others slap em together. Most of the time,though,it is crap in the system after a failure that kills a fresh assembly. After a catastrophe, it is HARD to get all that metal out of the system. I sometimes go with a fresh condenser. They aren't all that expensive, and are good insurance.
Flushing machines do a pretty good job, but I sure don't own one, so there you go again.
I personally don't like 134a in an old system like ours, and have been running RB276, to keep the head pressure down.
 
Bought my new one from Savanna air
Think it was $229.00 setup for R134
Just had to put the old sensor in
 
Savanna has them new. They're $259, and include a new compressor, accumulator (Drier), orifice, complete seal and o-ring kit, and compressor oil. I'm gonna get one in the next few weeks.
 
Already had the drier so that's why mine was cheaper, nice package
 
Flush the system good and replace everything you can-- accum, orfice tube,etc. crap in the system is the big enemy. (This advice from someone who worked for a major AC rebuilder for several years.) Rebuilt units are kind of hit and miss--but good prep work will increase your odds.

You realize that RB276 is 79% HFC134A....right?

Go new on A/C components any time you can!! I've installed reman compressors, and had them make noise from the first startup. I've tried several different manufacturers, and haven't had any of them last more than three years.

If you have a catastrophic failure, replace the accumulator, orifice tube and find someone who can flush the system.
 
I vote for new.

I am tired of replacing reblt. compressors with reblt. compressors. I have gone that route three times (I know, but I am kinda mentally slow...or maybe just an optimist).

One reblt. had bad threads for the bolt that holds hoses clamp plate. So, on a 110 degree day (of course), the threads gave way and I had nice PAG oil all over my engine.

Also, on our cars, there is so little room to work on them that it is not worth the trouble...I would rather be able to create billable time than waste hours on replacing a Russian roulette component.

i agree with rem3200 i my self work for a rebuilder in florida i myself will go for a new one whin the time comes to change mine out spend the money and save the headache later down the road
