Most reproduced sheet metal products are EDP (Electrophoretic deposition) coated. It is said that this coating has to be sanded off prior to priming & painting. I'm going to use a repop trunk lid and was wondering if I should sand the underside of the trunk lid too. What would happen if I primed and painted the underside without sanding? Any thoughts?

At least hit it with a scuff pad. The primer might stick to it for a while but it will not have the "teeth" to hold on.

I haven't seen anyone try to take all of the EDP coating off. Some of your repro sheetmetal may come with a few dents and dings and will require some love, maybe going to bare metal on the repair but for the most part as mentioned, just scuff it, then prime.
