Ok, I've been chasing my tail with this false knock thing on my car. After the new engine went in I've been getting some crazy readings even if you rev the car up in park.

Decided to pull the intake and check the lifter preload. Looked like it had way too much, so I decided to shim the rocker shafts. put .060" in first and the push rod had a little lash. So I went with a .030" shim. After back together cranked it up and a noise was very noticable and was the rockers hitting the valve cover but just on a couple cylinders.

I know I need to remedy this problem, but has anyone else had it? I don't know whether to take the shaft shims out and keep looking for the problem or if it could have been hitting the whole time just not as bad.

I guess I could stack 2 valve cover gaskets and then try it. What do you think?

Sorry, I guess I forgot the inportant info.

New champion Irons, 9441 head gaskets, stock rockers and a 212/212 flat tappet comp cam. I had the cam ground a little more aggressive than the off the shelf 212/212. Has just a hair more lift being .463"

My suggestion is to get the correct length pushrods rather than shimming the rocker shafts...

I wonder if you may be over reacting to something thats not an issue? When useing stock length push rods & only if the block & heads have been machined. Use SBC part number 817 lifters the plunger sits a little deeper in the lifter bore than the buick does. Valve stem heights should also be correct. Adustable rockers & shorter push rods are also a solution.Shimming the rocker stands is the last thing I would try. RJC also sells valve cover spacers which work well.
