What is the best way to set the endplay on a roller cam using the stock cover? I thought about removing the timing chain and gears and bolt a some bar stock to the cam extended it below the pan rail and use a dial indicater.

And what is everybody using to seal the girdle to the block?

There are many different ways/hardware to install billet roller cams if this is the type you are doing? Hardware and machining set the clearance.

End play is checked with the cam installed and timing cover in place.

We use the "Right Stuff" to seal the girdle to the block.

Yes, I understand that but, where are you putting the dial indicator to check the end play? Are you removing the rear cam hole plug? Just trying to find the best/easiest way to do it.

We check end play with the cam installed. Move it back and forth from the intake valley to check clearance in ready to run position.

I Understand the concept. Where do you mount your dial indicator to measure your clearance? Is there an easy way to mount a dial indicator with the front cover installed? Thanks!

Mount the dial base in the valley and just indicate fore and aft movement/play using a lobe.

I finally found some time to work on my motor. As far as the cam end play goes there is a drain back hole from the lifter valley to the front of the block. A perfect spot to mount the dial indicater on the back of the cam gear. I set it at .008". Thanks for the help.

Who makes the "right stuff" ? Is it available at the chain auto part stores?

The Right Stuff

Loctite - Permatex product. #25224

Looks like a Cheez Whiz can and is black.

Available where all fine gasket products are sold. ;)

Maybe even Pep Boys.

What is "The Right Stuff"?

Does anyone know if this is just Permatex Ultra-black in a "Cheez-Whiz " can? Luv the analogy. :D

I believe the delivery mechanism ie. the Cheez Whiz can and propellant makes it a different product "mix".

There is a guy on here that works there (Loctite) that would know for sure.

Seems lighter and fluffier to me than the usual ultra black in a tube.

Easier to apply to stuff too, even crackers. ;)

The absolute best gasket sealer(RTV) ive found come from International. WHen i do rear main seals on the powerstroke deisel motors it come in the kit, It is some incredible stuff.
The tube shows on it
T-442 RTV silicone rubber
1830858C1

I don't know what it is but I do know it works! It seems to be thicker and stickier than RTV black. It works best without a gasket but I have always had the surfaces clean. Never, ever had a leak after using it.

No Scott, its called "The Right Stuff". We use it at work. We got tired of the cheeze whiz cand drying up so we get it in caulking gun tubes now. It is "the best" stuff out there.
