Anyone know where I might buy a new rubber boot for the (steering wheel end) intermediate steering shaft (ISS)? Dealer indicates it has been discontinued but will sell me a new ISS for just over $200 (so someone STILL makes it)!

The boot was never serviced seperately. You had to buy the shaft. New intermediate shafts are discontinued BTW. The reason the boot wasn't seviced was because of safety reasons. Its much easier and safer to just replace the shaft.

Yes You Can Buy A Booth ,10 Or 12 Bucks,do A Search..i Think I Saw It On A Monti Carlo Site I Know Some One Sells It

Eric,
What is dangerous about replacing the rubber boot at the coupling (end away from the steering box)?
Conrad

I saw that boot. POS that didn't look anything like the original IIRC.

Whats dangerous? I really dont know. The shaft could pull apart or lock up. All of the newer GM cars and trucks have trouble with the intermediate shafts. Usually they bind. I still see good enough ones in the boneyards. I have to replace mine about every other year because I didn't spot weld the heat shield back on after the last manifold crack. The U-Pull-Its get about $10 for them.

Good ol Brian at GBodyParts has them new...reproductions. I have changed mine. It's not a 'perfect' fit, but it works well enough to keep dirt from getting in. I think his new ones are about $10.

Changing it can be time consuming, but it's not really diffucult. Keep track of your parts and put them back together correctly. I had to mainly get my old shaft apart, clean it well enough to slide, grease it and reassemble. Ended up puting new power steering hoses in a couple of places because I found a leak or two.

If there are U-pull-it yards in your neck of teh woods, any G-body shaft is the same. I've found plenty with good boots in Florida. I'm sure you can find one up your way.

All of mine are torn

How bad is the removal and install of the new unit? Anyone have pics?
