Hello again guys,

Still can't figure out why I am burning rich? I have my tps sensor all the way up and my idle is still at 1000 rpm? I have backed the air screw valve where the throttle cable is all the way back still at 1000 rpm? New IAC valve, New Computer with a 93 octane chip, new o2 sensor, and have used seafoam to clean the injectors? Would the cam shaft sensor have anything at all to do with running rich? Figured the smoke would go away after it warmed up but it still comes out and burns my eyes, it's not real heavy smoke but you can see it? Doesn't smell like gas, not blue or black more of a light gray color? Car has been sitting awhile but I have warmed it up for like 45 minutes straight and still has that rich smoke? Don't know what else to check or do at this point? Also how do you work that cam sensor tool that lights up red when sensor is positioned right? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again jretrodude :)

What do you mean by tps all the way up? You should only move the throttle plate screw to set IAC. TPS set at .42 throttle closed. Got a scantool?

No scan tool

No scan tool, if i move the tps all the way down i get an extremely high idle all the way up is where it needs to be? Right. :)

Could it be?

Could it be the transmission modulator valve leaking into the engine somehow? :)

How are you moving the tps exactly? Are you taking the screws loose and moving it?

Transmission modulator?

Yes loosing screws to check idle

Yes with no scan tool to hook up I have to go by sound and ear? I loosing the screws and move it either up or down? All the way up is where I think it needs to be? Not sure how to check it with the voltmeter? :) By the way will a extremely rich running motor ruin it or can I still get on it? Thanks guys? :)

http://www.vortexbuicks-etc.com/tuning.htm#Throttle Position Sensor Adjustment

you need to get a scantool or a voltmeter to set the TPS ,and you need a scantool to set IAC

i really hope you arent using your ear to monitor for knock

the high idle is due to the ecm not receiving the proper tps value to know car is at rest
last car i played with the tps was set above .48 and it would do the same as yours ,

get all values to normal before even thinking of going WOT and get a scantool or at min a knock gauge

go to this site and read all especially the basics

no our cars dont use vacuum modulators , it could be any number of things including and more likely a headgasket based on your discription of the smoke

Hi Pilgrum!

You must be a new owner or at least "new" to the performance aspect. :) before blindly attempting to make adjustments on these cars, you must do some "serious" research on the design and nature of the "beast"! That's where these boards are of great help. The board members here have come together to help us ol' chevy , ford, etc. racers not to give the buick community a black-eye in the racing world. For which we are greatly thankful!
In your case, it appears, you will get away unscathed and not be a member of the "parts-o'er-the -pavement" club. Please do "Honor " to your fellow buick owner/racers, for their unselfish and untiring effort to educate us "noobies" to the pitfalls of a "hybrid" masked by it's age being at the forefront; by going to the following web-sites and learning all you can about keeping these great vehicles alive, thus being a "really happy and fast" buick owner/racer!!!
www.gnttype.org www.vortexbuicks-etc.com
start at these locations first and understand your vehicle, then make adjustments. you will find the instructions for properly adj'g the tps in there also. "HAPPY RACING"

If you can't swing a scan tool, don't hot rod the car yet. Setting the TPS is impossible by ear, feel, ESP, etc. You need at least a volt/ohm meter. Spend $10-15 at Auto Zone and get a meter. Then you will be able to set the TPS, etc. This is not a car you want to set something up improperly. I have a few sets of head gaskets on the "carnage wall" to prove my point.

Thanks guys

Where can I find a decent direct scan tool at? And how would you hook it up? Does it connect to the engine diagnostic plug under the dash or does it go into the cigarette lighter? Also do they come with instructions on how to use it and tune the motor? Thanks again will buy one if I can find one at a decent price? :)

Hey bud- they come with directions. I am a Turbolink guy myself www.turbo-link.com but there are other good ones too. Mine hooks to the interface port under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. You'll need a laptop also. It will tell you everything your computer is sensing i.e. RPM, fuel mixture, O2mv, tps volts, IAC, BLM, etc. It comes with a really good manual. A program like this or a "scanmaster" is a must for a turbo Buick owner. Try www.fullthrottlespeed.com also. They have alot of goodies. Also, www.postonbuick.com, www.kirbanperformance.com, www.gbodyparts.com. All have Buick parts. I live near Aurora, IL. Are you in the Chicago Buick Club yet?

Anyone have a 2.1 for sale? Cheap?

Am looking to buy a 2.1 scanmaster anyone know where I can get one at a decent price? Thanks jretrodude :)

probe the blue wire with key forward and put volt meter on ohms now loosen top screw and leave bottom one slighlt snug now tap up or down to set idle setting of .42 now tighten top screw and loosen bottom screw and open up throttle body wide open and tap up or down to set at 4.75 for wot setting now tighten up and enjoy your iac will have to be set with a scanner when you adjust this you will have to go back and reset tps cause it will change it GOOD LUCK!!!!
