I about ran out of gas before I made the gas station. Put about 8 gallons in and when I started back up it has ran rough through that gas and is still rough after another 10 gal. I did run a gallon of Xylene with about 6 gallons of gas, the tank before that. It sounds like it's running on 5 cylinders. I'll change fuel filter tomorrow. Tell me I'm not going to have to pull the gas tank.
Any advice?
thanks

The fuel in the tank cools and lubricates the fuel pump. If the tank runs dry, the fuel pump can get very hot and even fail. If the motor is running bad, chances are the fuel pump has gone bad. You are probably going to have to pull the tank and replace the pump.

A lot of new cars have the same problem. They end up with noisey fuel pumps right off of the truck if they do not have gas added to the tank (they are only shipped with a few gallons in the tank) soon enough after delivery to the dealer. Those same vehicles often have early fuel pump failures.

Try changing the filter first. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, check pressure before and after filter replacement. Hopefully you'll get lucky and all ya did was pump a bunch of junk from the bottom of the tank into the filter. It's always a good idea to keep at least a 1/4 tank of gas in there all the time as the gas helps to cool the pump, and prevent overheating.

I'd check to make sure fule pressure is where it is supposed to be and rises pound for pound with boost. If not replace the fuel filter and see if problem is corrected. If it continues you get to drop the tank! It may be as simple as a colapsed sock.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't run it bone dry, but I'm hoping the sock didn't collapse from debris. I have a fuel pressure gauge, so I'll check it before and after the new fuel filter. Could have the Xylene disolved any old stuff in the tank that gas wouldn't have?
