I has a problem lately with my battery being a little low and my Thrasher security screwing up, so I swapped out with what i think is a stock chip.

I have had a problem with high boost knock/cutting out/running like crap with the Thrasher. I love the drivability with the Thrasher. I thiught I had a bad coil module or coil pack.

So, I thought I would open her up with this other chip and HOLY CRAP!!!! It runs much better at WOT!!!!!! Granted, I have 93 octane and it boosted less with the NON-thrasher chip, but man, I had o2 of 823 and 0 knock!!

With the Thrasher, I have around 790- 800 O2 and 3 or 4 degrees knock/black smoke/ cutting out, etc........

What can I do?????????

I love the security and mild manners of the Thrasher, but...........

BTW Its a Thrasher 92 for Bluetops.

I have the THRASHER working now, just needed a new battery, but wht does it run so bad with the Thrasher???

What chip should I use??
 
Does the knock occur during 1st gear? The thrasher chip I had, had a pretty bad 1st gear boost spike. About 3 psi over 2nd and 3rd gear boost.
 
To coin a phrase, your sad devotion to that ancient EPROM has not helped you to conjure up a TR that runs as it should...

I'll have knock starting at about 10lbs and blows black smoke and seemed to do good with this other chip. I believe the knock occurs in every gear!

Anyone have a chip suggestion?

I have noticed that I have a small exhaust leak where my maniold flange is warped. I know that isn't helping things at all but why does the Thrasher chip have such a hard time?
 
What is your fuel pressure?
I tried to turn down my fuel pressure just a bit because I have alcohol, but it REALLY didn't like that. Should be 45 lbs line off.
 
I had a thrasher 92 and red's 93 chip. My car liked the reds chip much better. Didn't knock and seemed to run better all around.
I didn't like the quick spool of the thrasher chip either. Also check your orfice size in your y-hose. Get a replacement peice from John's performance to make sure you have the right size. This cured my overboosting problem and it was only $5.
 
You didn't really say what the car was like before your battery problems. Was it fine?

The Thrasher runs the boost solenoid at all times when the car is moving which IMO will eventually kill it. However that is how the Thrasher achieves that great off-idle spool. At slow mph up to I think 20 mph it runs the solenoid at 100%. It also runs a higher than typical solenoid PW in gears 1-2 and perhaps your ignition is weak and causing the problem. Adjust your waste gate down about 1.5 psi and try the Thrasher again.

At WOT in gears 3 or 4 the Thrasher pulls more boost than most chips do today.

People also say the Thrasher runs low timing but mine is running the same as my other chips really, if you are using a scan tool, subtract 15 degrees once warmed up to see the true value. The other thing is the Thrasher will pull a little timing if your intake air is hot, a cold air intake keeps this table from doing anything.

Just installed a Thrasher in an almost stock GN [with -237 regulator]. Spooled faster [which most people want], ran better, smoother, just comfirms how eccentric these cars can be with various chips.:confused:

The common problen I have seen with Thrashers is bent pins. Obviously this is operator error in switching chips often.
 
I installed the Thrasher again and took it out for a spin.

For some reason its doing better. Before, when the boost got up around 10 or so it would start fluttering like I had a rev limiter on it when I still didn't even have it at WOT.

Last night, as long as I didn't let it get over 14-15 lbs, It would pull strong. I do need to turn the boost down a bit,I think its at around 17 lbs right now (much too high for my 93 octane)

I don't know why its doing better, but i can live with it now!!:D
