I'm repainting two trailer wheels and after two sessions of chemical paint stripping there was still some paint hanging on. Got out the siphon sandblaster from decades ago and bought a bag of play sand. Had to get my technique right and dip the feed tube in and out of the bag so it wouldn't continuously clog. Got both wheel faces done with 1/2 a 50 lb. bag (I wire wheeled the back sides as they were never painted). I forgot how distasteful sandblasting is. Sand gets everywhere and it is rather uncomfortable working way out in the yard so I don't get it near the house. This time was a little better; I used to find it behind my ears days later. This should be one of those Mike Rowe Dirty Jobs.

Next time before you decide to do something like that. It may be worth calling around to some machine shops to see if they could do it for you. I have a friend here in town who runs a machine shop and has a large blasting cabinet for doing things like that. It may save you some money in the long run and surely save you from making a mess. Unless its something you want to do yourself.

Sand blasting is a 1st time learning experience. I did the same thing 30 years ago trying to save a few bucks, your right YUCK !! I bet your second experience of sandblasting will at a shop set up for it . Lol :eek:

I use a guy that does soda blasting. Apparently, much cleaner and reasonably priced.
I had a shop do some sand blasting for me and it "looked" unpleasant.

Had my rear end out for refinishing last winter. Was gonna wire wheel but gave up. Thought about sandblasting myself.....Finally decided to take it to a Monument business who specialized in Gravestones, they media blasted it with Aluminum Oxide (I did tape up all critical areas). Turned out fantastic.
Best $40 Cash I ever spent. I'm gonna keep these guys in mind for any future media blasting before powder coating parts.

Play sand is not a good media for a blaster because it is not sifted that well. I use the medium grit sifted paver sand. I also use safety goggles, full face mask, ear muffs, full length clothing, gloves, and something around my neck. Not a fun job. Probably not worth it.
