Setting cam end play

Is there any clever ways to set the cam end play to make it easier? Ive got a hyd. roller 218 212 if that matters, with the rollmaster double roller. Thanks alot. Lifters arn't in yet either.

If the cam cover in the rear of the block is not installed a dial indicator mounted to the back of the block is a good place.

It did not look like it would be easy to get a good reading probing a lobe thru the lifter galley area.

I was actually able to put my caliper through the oil drain holes in the lifter gally and take a measurement. Got .008" end play. Thanks.
