smell gas from the valve cover breathers

while working on the car the other day i noticed that the smoke coming from the vc breathers has a strong gas oder almost like raw gas . could this mean my piston rings are shot thanks for any info

do a leakdown test using a leak down tester, only way to see if the rings are bad, or valves etc
