I noticed smoke coming from PM area on start up the other day.I couldn't identify exactly where the smoke was coming from, but it looked like it was from that area. Brake fluid is at the right level and there were no signs of overflowing fluid. The brakes were also very soft at first, the pedal went just about to the floor and with a few pumps the brake light came on. I took it for a drive around the block and the brakes seemed to be fine and there was no smoke. Could this be signs of PM going out?

Only thing that would smoke would be the pump running all the time and getting super hot. The brake light should not come on in just a few quick back to back pumps now 5-6 it will flicker and then go back off quick.

With the key off get in the car and pump the brakes until it gets rock hard.
Now, turn key on no start and the pump will come on and the pass side brake reservior level will drop as the pump runs.

When the pump stops running the level should be 1/4 to 3/8 inch. And the pump should be able to achieve this in about 10 seconds.
