This sounds really odd... but I got back from the track last night, and when I got off the highway I noticed something funny when slightly off idle: a ticking/rasping @ ~1200rpm. Torque converter bolts? Exhaust leak? Headgasket?

Hmm... got the car home. Broke the turbolink back out... went for a drive and found that most everything is just where it is supposed to be, ideal conditions if you will.

Popping the hood and feathering the throttle it sounds like the rocker arms are ticking. Is it abnormal for the shafts to loosen off? There are only 3 bolts holding them in place afterall.

Doing the basic over lookage this morning:
Plugs: perfect leanish/clean burn
Coolant: all there
Oil: no coolant in it

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Couple of things you may check:

1) Crank sensor. If it gets out of whack the interupter rings can be hitting the sensor causing a ticking sound.

2) Cam sensor. If the hold down clamp is loose it can tick also. The worse it's loose the louder it usually is. At least it was for me a few years ago. Good luck.

If you suspect the rockers, pull the valve cover and unbolt the rocker shafts. Inspect them really close, they are prone to cracking around the bolt holes.

Thanks guys.

Hmmm... I was also missing the DS intercooler bolt.... it just popped out Sat night on the way home from the track... it made a nasty "thud" at the floorboard/firewall when it hit.

I replaced that bolt today. And the noise seems to have gone.

I'll check again on the ride home.

Strange thing these engine harmonics. ;)
